Theories and Conclusion Piece for The Serpent’s Shadow
A battle fought for a cause larger than oneself is a battle worth fighting for. A theme of selfless bravery, is expressed throughout the book The Serpent’s Shadow by Rick Riordan. The two main characters, and narrators, are Carter Kane and Sadie Kane. Carter Kane shows his braveness and selflessness throughout the story. For example, the main antagonist Apophis, the God of Chaos, in the form of a serpent, keeps promising Carter that he will spare him and everyone he loves, if he gives up the sun God, Ra, to him. However, Carter refuses this offer many times. That is because Carter realizes that if he does bow down to Apophis, and saves all the people he loves, he will be throwing away the world--the very thing that he and Sadie have been fighting to protect. Also, this quote from the book should prove my point, ”I remembered the white obelisk rising from The Sea of Chaos. It had stood for thousands of years, against all odds.It represented courage and civilization, making the right choice instead of the easy choice. If I failed today, that obelisk would finally crumble. Everything humans have built since the first pyramids of Egypt would be for nothing” (362-363). In this quote, the ‘white obelisk’, standing in The Sea of Chaos, choses to make the right choice, which is doing its job by keeping Apophis’ shadow pinned, instead of the easy choice, and crumbling, therefore, allowing his shadow to escape and roam freely. Also, if it did choose to crumble, that would have marked the end of mankind since the obelisk stands for civilization and courage. In addition, Carter is approached by Apophis, the serpent, and offered safety when he raises The Sea of Chaos, destroying the world and Ma’at (the order of the universe). Apophis says that he is going to spare Carter and Sadie Kane if they bow down to him. However, Carter refuses this deal, which is an extreme act of courage since agreeing to the serpent’s tempting brive would go against everything he stands for, as well as the good of humanity. At this point, Carter is also very weak, and hurt after just watching his girlfriend get eaten by Apophis. Not only that but he thinks that Sadie, his sister, is going to die with him and his mother spirit is about to be consumed by Apophis’s shadow.Carter knows that fighting Apophis is the right decision, and instead of allowing him to destroy the world, and Ma’at, he fights him, ignoring his constant attempts at manipulation. And, through it all, Carter continues to honor the ‘white obelisk’ by making the right choice and not the easy choice .That is how Carter Kane proves to be selfless and willing to fight for a greater cause. Then, there is Sadie Kane, Carter’s sister. Like her brother, she is courageous and unselfish. During a fight, she choses to use her magic in order to protect the trainees and the rebel magicians. In chapter 18, “Dozens of whirlwinds spun through the hall, thickening and forming into creatures of sand--sphinxes, crocodiles, wolves, and lions. They attacked in every direction, even pouncing on our defenseless friends.”Sadie!” Amos warned. “Protect them!” I quickly changed spells--casting hasty shields over our unconscious inmates.” (345). Sadie shields the “unconscious inmates”, meaning the rebel magicians, even though they attack the nomes in the first place. She knows that they will need more people to fight Apophis, so it is a smart decision. It was for the greater good, instead of ignoring it and seeking revenge against the rebels. This is how I believe Sadie Kane showed to be selfless and focus on the big picture instead of her own vendetta. Both of the siblings proved to be very great at following my theory of “A battle fought for a cause larger than oneself is a battle worth fighting for”.
what are they even talking about earthquakes
If the scroll holds the key to defeat aphophis then why cant he attack now
How can a snake posses an artifact.
How can Sadie see into the duat.
I think the magicians are trapped and not dead.
In the book “ The Serpent's Shadow” by Rick Riordan is a book all about optimism. The two main characters, Sadie and Carter kane, use optimism a lot. From battling gods to walking through a maze they need each other to stay optimistic. They both need to battle through the tough times. The Kanes use negative situations and turn them into positive ones.
Sadie and Carter care for each other. BIckering all the time and only meeting eachother for one year, doesn't help my case. But through the bickering and the fighting comes care and love. For one example is when Carter gets trapped in the duat by the evil magician Setne, Sadie comes and helps her brother from the evil magician and says she wouldn't know what to do without him. Another example is when Sadie and Carter are fighting together against The giant snake Apophis, Carter says that even though Sadie is annoying she does make one hell of a sister. Even though it doesn't look like it at first Sadie and Carter care for eachother.
The Kanes need each other to lift the other ones spirit in a tough time. One example is when Walt dies. Sadie is very sad and confused. So when she goes to Carter, he helps her regain her spirits by telling her happy things. another example is when Carter thought it was his fault that the Texas nome was destroyed, sadie kept reassuring him that it wasn't his fault and that even if they got there in time they would have been no help. even though it does not sound like a big quality to have, it is very important that Sadie and Carter lift each others spirits even if it is not that big of a deal.
The kanes need their friends to help them. In a bad situation the kanes need someone to help them. That is where Sadie and carter's friends come in. one example is when Carte and sadie are losing to Apophis and need help quickly. then Walt comes out of no where and saves their lives. Plus the momentum of the battle was in favor of The kanes. Another example is when Sara Jacobi is attacking Carter then Zia comes and saves him. The kanes can turn bad situations into good ones but need help sometimes.
The Kanes are always getting stuck in bad ways. But they use Optimism to get out of it. If you ever are stuck, think one day you will break through. The Kanes use negative situations and turn them into positive ones.
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
