Observation: I still can't believe that the people of Ember were living in an underground cave. Lina and Doon are very brave when trying to help the survivors of Ember to find a home for them in the exciting world ahead of them. The author is portraying both these characters in a new way. They are more mature and no more ordinary kids.(23)
Hypothesis: Once Lina and Doon have arrived in the city of Sparks and will be living there for the past six months they have a lot of questions and curiosity. Maybe after finding out more about the city of Sparks and the inhabitants living there, Lina and Doon might be able to find out why they had to go underground. (51)
observation: it's amazing how we don't stop to think about the useful things we have in the world. We don't realize how much we depend on the electricity we have, and the cars we have, and so much more. Its really hard to live a life like the people of Sparks but still these people are thankful for what little they have compared to us.
sorry, forgot my pg number. (94-96)
Observation: I actually just finished this book over the weekend, and i realized how Lina and Doon had a lot of curiosity and bravery in the first book, but they both exceeded expectations in the second. (303)
Observation: We know about Lina's personality even more, because she is truly the main character, and Doon is not as important, like he was in the first book. (163)
Yes I really agree with you Laura. The author expresses more about how lina feels in this new city more than Doon.
Lina is shown as a very persistent character when she first figures out what a bicycle is. Seeing these things that go around and around just by your feet making you go even faster was fascinating to Lina. She keeps on trying and trying to ride the bicycle and she falls a lot. But she never gives up and tries again ( 100).
Lina is very dependent on Doon in the book. She feels as if Doon is the only friend she has. Doon, on the other hand, wants to spend time with new people. He wants to explore more and learn more. I think that Lina will eventually have to find new people and find new friends so that her loneliness goes away. (104)
I feel like something bad is going to happen in the book. I feel as if the author is showing the reader, me, signs that the people of Ember will have to move someplace else. Day by Day they are getting less food, working more, and some are fainting because of the heat that they are in. What will happen when the City of Sparks will no longer be able to help them and provide food and shelter for them?
my pg number for comment above is (111).
Lina and Doon are somewhat similar. Lina wants to learn more about lands beyond the City of Spatks and Doon wants to build a new city for his people. Both characters have a thirst to learn and expplore more to help the people of Ember (106).
The way the people of Sparks are treating these new inhabitants, it seems as if they are no longer wanting to provide food, clothing, and shelter on their land. (127)
Maybe the worries of the people of Ember have will cause them to build a place of their own. They are getting less more food and they have to work more in the boiling heat. The team that Tick has created will have to do something to help the city of Sparks and their own home (132).
Now that Doon is trying to help Cary to fix a water pump he is working with water currents. Maybe Doon will eventually figure out how to crate electricity through the flow of water. The books he found in the storehouse of the City of Sparks will have some infornation on Science (135).
A theme in this book is hope. Every single character in this book is clinging on to hope. Lina and Doon hope that they will be able to have their own home to live in with their own people. The people of Sparks hope that they will have enough food for themselves and the inhabitants from the underground. With this hope the reader keeps on reading and the author keeps on writing (151).
Lina is a character that believes in something so much that she almost thinks its true. She is so determined that she will find this city she's dreaming about which makes me even think that there is uch a city in the world she lives in (151).
I think that Tick wants to steal from the storehouse which will cause a big conflict throughout the book (154).
Lina is soooo brave. I can't believe that she is actually going to go on this dangerous trip to see the city. Will she ever come back. What will Caspar do when he finds out? (157)
L:ina could also get hurt during this journey. Maybe the Author wnated to create such a conflict between Lina and the situation that the author has created (159)
Just because Lina had gone off with Caspar Torren put all his anger from his jealousy on the inhabitants of Ember. He blamed Doon for something causing a huge problem in the book. This might cause a fight between people of Ember and Sparks
Maddy was so calm when she saw Lina. It was as if Maddy knew that Lina was there. As they go on in their journey Maddy and Lina are very quiet but they like each other without saying it to each other. They hang out and Maddy shows that she cares for Lina. Maybe eventually Maddy will be an important character to Lina and they will work together to find the city that LIna's looking for. (183)
Caspar usually makes enemies and then he blames the harm that comes to him on those enemies when actually he provokes the people that he sees on his expeditions. (pg 192)
Now that people think that Doon actually ruined the tomatoes they might cause problem to the inhabitants from Ember. The mean messages on the walls about the people of Ember might make the leaders kick the people of Ember out of the city. (196)
Now that the leaders have decided to show the people of Ember to behave themselves I think that the inhabitants might want to leave at this point. I think that Tick and Doon will come up with a plan to help their people. (208)
It seems as if Caspar is bluffing and does not know the real location of the treasure. (212)
Maddy's warning is showing that the city that caspar, lina, and maddy are iin is dangerous and something bad is going to happen. (225)
To choose the good over bad even though someone is doing bad to you is really hard. A lot of bad has happened in this book because people wanted revenge on each other and the same thing is happening between the people of Ember and Sparks. It's just as Maddy had describes to Lina. But Maddy also said that you could reverse the direction of the fight or argument and instead of doing wrong to the person who did wrong you could forgive them and do something good to them. (227-228)
Tick wants to physically hurt the people who give his people and himself food and shelter. And he is boasting about this. He doesn't understand that revenge will only lead to violence. This is a huge conflict throughout the book. (238)
I hope that what Lina said never comes true. I hope that the disaster will never happen again that happened in the old times. (245)
Even though Lina and the people of ember are the treasure, how is that so important now. What is Lina and Maddy going to do now that they have figured out what the treasure is. What will happen to the hope that the story is built on. (252)
How will the emberians react to the decision of the elders. I think that there will be a huge fight between Sparks and ember which will be very ghastly but doon and lina and maddy will be able to stop this fight in time. (256)
Yes! Yes! Yes! I knew that doon would pick the right side. He would not be like tick. Doon is a protagonist. He is very brave and thoughtful as a character. ( 264)
Torren thinks that he might be able to survive in the ear that is going to happen but what he doesn't know is that everybody gets hurt in a war, either emotionally or physically ( 269)
Lina and Doon have a very special bonding. Throughout the book Lina has become good friends with doon and both characters need each other. Friendship is a very important theme (276).
One thing I learned from this book is that revenge will get you knowwhere. Doing good to the people that have done bad to you is a big conflict in this book. But hopefully Lina and doom will understand that to be good is the only way to stop an argument from becoming a war (282).
Lina is a very wise character. She wants to fight violence with non violence. She just doesn't know how to (285)
I think that the people of Ember are being ungrateful and they are using violence when they could just talk to the people of Spark. The people of Sparks are also being very selfish and are only thinking about themselves and their storage of food. Both sides are wrong and both sides are fight fire with fire which will create a huge argument. (287)
Is Ben actually going to fire a gun or cannon at the people of Ember. This will just cause destruction and everyone is going to get hurt. (293)
Being courageous and sticking to your principles is a really hard thing to do. Doon has to decide if he will risk his life for Torren and save him. But I still don't know why Doon would ever even try to help the person who blamed him for something he didn't do. This is something I'm curious to see.(295)
Doon is a very kind and brave character. He had finally done what Maddy had said earlier in the book. He had reversed the direction of the argument and done the right thing by helping the people who he thought were the enemies. (297)
Its time for Lina to do her part in the war. She also has to decide if she can reverse the direction of the war. Will Lina be able to be selfless and help the people of Sparks or will she turn out to be like Tick and his warriors and seek revenge for no apparent reason (301).
Wow! This whole book is based on bravery and selflessness and friendship. This book shows so many good character traits of
Lina and Doon and how they are so kind and courageous. This book also shows the want for revenge that Tick has and the selfishness that Ben has towards the "cavepeople" (303).
By reversing the direction of the war Lina and Doon had created a situation where the fire that had happened become the enemy and the Emberians and people of Sparks had become united to fight this fire. (306).
The author has created an amazing plot twist. Everybody thought that Tick was a hero but it turned out to be that all he wanted was people to be angry and chose him as a leader. He created those attacks on the emberians. He hurt his own people just for power (310).
One accident helped to unite the people of ember and sparks together. It's amazing how one act of courage can lead to a lot of peace between people.
Mary is a good leader. she knows how to deal with problems. Hopefully know "all" the people of Sparks will leave in harmony. (327)
The author just brought up light bulbs all over again in the book which is very strange. This must be a foreshadowing that there must be electricity again (331).
I knew that Doon would eventually figure out how to make electricity. Lina had given the magnet to Doon and because of this he was able to make the machine. Again, Lina and Doon saved the day! (336)
The author ends the book on her last sentence being about hope and love. These two things are very big themes throughout the book and these themes also explain the character of Lina and Doon (338).
I think that the people Torren see coming into his town are the people from Ember. (7)
I think Torren doesn't like the people of Ember because he thinks they are lying about once living underground.
The people of Ember are mad at the people of Sparks because they aren't getting enough food. They want to protest. (114)
The people of Ember are learning so they can create a city on their own without the people of Spark's help.
Lina is very curious. She tries to learn a lot about the new world she is in.
Lina wants to help her city. She is going to travel secretly to an old city. (160)
Torren isn't a nice person. He accused Doon of wasting the tomatoes when they had a little food left. (170)
Maddy found out that Lina was secretly in the truck. (174)
Maddy is trying to help Lina. She convinces Caspar to let her come with them. (176)
I realized that you should make friends not enemies when you are a roamer in the book because the person can get revenge on you if you make them your enemy. This happened already to Caspar when he mistreated a person. That night the same person came and took some of Caspar's food and put dirt on the rest of it.
Caspar is not a nice person. He mistreats someone for asking for food when the person ran out.
Torren isn't nice either. He accused Doon of throwing tomatoes in a food shortage even though he did it all along.
A lot of people in Sparks do not like the people of Ember.
Many people in Sparks now dislike the people of Ember. (198)
I think the treasure city that Caspar and Maddy are talking about is Ember because Ember did have a lot of helpful and more advanced technology that could be useful to the people of Sparks. (210)
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
