Katherine Applegate wrote a Newbery Award winning book, The One and Only Ivan. The One and Only Ivan is a story about a caged gorilla named Ivan who lives in a mall. He lives with his friends; Stella, an elephant, and a stray dog named Bob, who lives in Ivan’s cage. This novel is written from the first person point of view through the mind of Ivan. The author does this to show the differences between an animal's and a human’s point of view.
There are many instances where the reader is made aware of the differences between humans and animals. One example of this is where Ivan states that “we are both great apes”(16). This shows that from Ivan’s point of view, he sees himself and humans as being similar because both are special animals. From Ivan’s perspective, there isn’t a big difference between people and gorillas, other than that one is free and one is caged. A human may see this in a different way. A human could say he or she as a totally different species than apes, and probably wouldn’t say they are “great apes.” Another example of this is “A good zoo is how humans make amends” (64). This quote shows the difference between an animal’s and a human’s point of view. Ivan’s friend Stella, an elephant, sees a zoo where the conditions are good and the animals are treated well, as a way for humans to justify caging animals. But humans may not feel that they are doing anything wrong by caging animals. Therefore, there is no reason for them to “make amends.” So the reader can infer the difference between the two points of view.
In conclusion, by using the first person point of view, Ivan and Stella show the differences between the point of view of people and apes. Ivan sees little difference between the two species, and Stella thinks that humans try to justify caging animals by creating a “good zoo.” The reader sees the difference between the point of views of humans and animals, because both animals express their understanding of humans and human behavior, whereas the humans in the story do not . By using the first person point of view, especially through the perspective of Ivan, Katherine Applegate allows the reader to relate to the animals and makes them “human-like.”
