Theories and Conclusions
The author uses multimedia in his writing to ground this fictional story into reality
Throughout the fictional story, From Texas With Love, the author uses the internet, pictures/drawings, and photographs to ground this fantasy story into reality. Dan Gutman includes actual places in our lives in his story to engage and give the reader a better sense of what is happening in the book.
The author implements in his writing the use of photographs. These photographs put all readers on the same page, because they are all looking at the same picture. For example, on page 116, Dan Gutman included a photograph of the Bowling Hall of Fame. As a reader, I do not know what the Bowling Hall of Fame looks like, so adding this visual helps me understand the setting of this situation. As well as helping the reader understand the setting , some photos also explain information about the where the scene is taking place. A picture supporting this could be found on page 53, where the author has a photograph of the sign explaining the town of Bauxite, Arkansas. Without this important information, I would never have known that the reason they went there was because it was, ”The Aluminum Capital of the World”.
Another important aspect that the author included is drawings .These pictures are used throughout this book to explain smaller details of the setting, or about the scene. One example is on page 190 when the author incorporated a picture of a mammoth bone, because in a museum they visited, they encountered this on their way through the museum. When I read this, it makes me feel like I am with them, and helps me understand what types of places they are visiting. Another example of this is on page 59 when Dan Gutman adds a picture of teeth to explain that there were aluminum teeth in the Bauxite Museum in Arkansas. This picture helped me get a better feel for what is like in the Bauxite Museum. The pictures are like words to describe what the author wants us to know.
In my opinion, the coolest technique that Mr. Gutman uses in his writing is the internet. Yes, the internet. In the beginning of the book the author states on page 30 , “...if you’d like to follow the McDonalds on their trip back home to California, it’s easy. Go on the internet and go to Google Maps”. Every place the characters go in the book, there is a little box in the corner of the page, in which as they arrived at the given place, that tells you what to type into Google Maps to see where they are. A page in this book that is a good example is on page 216. There is a small box that tells you to type into the A box - Waco, TX, and in the B box - Austin, TX to find the route from Waco, Texas to Austin. If the reader spends the time to go on it, it can help him/her understand the location of the characters better.
I have concluded that there are many ways an author can show readers parts of their stories. I think that more authors should try to use multimedia techniques in their writing. If they do books will be more interesting and diverse.
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
