"I grabbed the phone from my bedside table and saw Gus's Mom on the caller ID, everything inside of me collapsed." This is how John Green announces the Death of Augustus Waters.
Best book ever!!!!!!! This book is so touching and deep. It really engages readers into imagining what it would be like if they had a life like Hazel's life. Enjoy reading, this book is soooooo worth it!
"but I pictured him at my funeral, and that helped me text properly"(102) Hazel is thinking about Augustus Waters and feels like he helps her feel okay and like she doesn't have cancer.
when I read page 3, "I was depressed, presumably because I rarely left the house, spent a lot of time in bed, read the same book over and over, and devoted quite a bit of my abundant free time thinking about death." Even though I am only on page 3, there is already a character trait proposed by the main character, Hazel.
The main character, Hazel has cancer,(started when she was 13) And shes fighting with her parents so I think shes going through a lot right now. She has a difficult life so far.
" I'm just saying i'd rather be deaf than blind if I had the choice, which I realize I don't have..."(p. 15). This shows how Hazel always thinks of the bad things that can happen and always has negative things on her mind.
"Why are you looking at me like that? Augustus half smiled. Because your beautiful"(p. 16). This gives Hazel so much confidence and makes her really happy because she has always liked him.
"He pushed himself up to go but then fell back down onto the couch and sneaked a kiss onto my cheek. Augustus !" (125) Hazel really didn't want him to her boyfriend so she geta upset when he does those kind of things.
when I read page 27, "The fact that Augustus made me feel special did not necessarily indicate that I was special."Augustus likes Hazel, but she doesn't want to admit that she has feelings back for him. He makes her feel special, and I think that she secretly likes him.
"I followed him inside"(P.27) This quote illustrates how Hazel got closer and closer with Augusts and now is going to his house. I wonder whats going to happen with them as the story goes on.
Hazel is starting to really really really like Augusts and in my opinion I think there going to become more serious and get into a relationship. I think they fit really good together. (P.31)
''Like how many people do you think have ever died ?" (151)
This shows that hazel and augustus are always thinking of death.
'' I'm in love with you , and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and I am in love with you''(153) This shows how much Augustus loves and cares about Hazel.
when read page 29, "Animals are just too cute?" Gus asked.
"I want to minimize the number of deaths I am responsible for," I said.
Hazel has a very sarcastic and smart attitude, Gus says its because shes a very sophisticated college girl. By giving Hazel these attributes, the author slides some humor into the novel.
*when I read page 28
"Issac couldn't go on or maybe that was all he has written" (272) The way John Green shows narration and voice in Hazel makes the story more understandable from her point.
It was Augusts turn to call Hazel but he never did.. finally after it was on her mind for awhile she called him and he answered right away he said he was going to call her but he ended up not I guess.. They got into a whole conversation and in my opinion Hazel and Augusts like each other. They go to each others houses a lot and they hang out a lot. (P.67)
Hazel is going through hard times and all she wants to do is go up to her room be alone and read.. I feel really bad for Hazel. It seems like shes really depressed and not herself. I hope she gets over whats in her way and over comes whats making her upset. (p.95)
" You say you don't want pity, but your very existence depends on it"( 192) This shows that when peter van houten is drunk he gets rowdy.
"This cancer ruined thing I'd spent years dragging around suddenly seemed worth the struggle, worth the chest tubes and the PICC lines." (202) This shows that hazel cares about augustus.
"That was the worst part about having cancer, sometimes: The physical evidence of disease separates you from other people." (p.101)
This shows that Hazel does not like that her disease separates her from other people.
Hazel woke up in the middle of the night and she screaming. Something went wrong and she has a really really bad pain in her brain/head. Her parents came running into her room and they got in the car to go to the hospital to see what was going on. But the saddest part is that Hazel said she tells herself everyday that she may not make it and she has to keep fighting.. I find that very sad. (p.105)
Augusts is the most caring and loving person. Hazel has had to stay in the hospital and Augusts has been waiting in the waiting room just to see her. Augusts is the perfect person for Hazel.. Hazel has to stay in the hospital for another 6 days but I am not positive what happened to her yet. (p.108)
"I'm in love with you," he said quietly.
"Augustus," I said
"I am" he said... I'm in love with you, and I'm not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I'm in love with you, and I know that love is just shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we're all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we'll ever have, and I am in love with you."
Augustus is so sweet he will admit that he loves Hazel to her and he would make a whole speech to tell her that he really does.
"Okay" he said
"Okay" I said
Augustus and Hazel have this thing were whenever one of them says okay they both say Okay and it makes them both feel better. Also whenever they say Okay they both do something together
"I do, Augustus. I do."(313) After reading a note, this is the amazing way John Green decided to end the novel with a strong conclusion.
when I read page 92, "Dr. Maria said I couldn't go to Amsterdam without an adult intimately familiar with my case, which more or less meant either Mom or Dr. Maria herself." Augustus invited Hazel to go to Amsterdam with him to meet the author of her favorite book, but Hazel might not be able to go, because her cancer is not in a stable position right now.
"And sneaked a kiss onto my cheek. Augusts! I said. Friendly! he said."(p.125) Earlier in the book Hazel told Augusts how she didn't want to kiss him or anything and she didn't feel comfortable with him kissing her.. When he decided to kiss her on the cheek she got really shocked. I feel like Hazel really likes Augusts and Augusts really likes her back but she just doesn't feel conferrable.
Hazel is now going on her trip she always wanted to go on!! Shes really really happy and is so glad her mom is letting her go. I am really happy for her. (p. 127)
Hazel finally gets to Amsterdam when she went on her trip with Augusts and her parents! She is having so much fun and shes super happy she got to go! Shes doing a lot of fun activities and shes in her hotel room with her parents and Augusts. She said she has a lot of things planned for her trip and as i'm reading I am really excited for her. (p.157)
Hazel and Augustus have grown to love each other and to care of each other.
"Augustus removed his jeans then his leg"(207) Augustus and Hazel don't care about if they have cancer or not , they just want to be together.
"The world is not wish-granting factory" Augustus is dying and Hazel just found about it and the only reason he didn't tell her because he didn't want her feel like she had to take care of him.
when I read page 215, I learned that Hazel's tumor growth is under control, and she is doing better. This means that she is probably going to be able to go to Amsterdam.
when I read page 116, The doctor just confirmed that Hazel's cancer is not going away (ever) unless there is a miracle, which is very unlikely.
"I mean, I was going to have to go through hell for six months or a year and lose my leg and then at the end, it still might not work, you know?" (p.166) This quote is very sad and explains a lot. One thing that is explains is that Augusts has cancer before and it went away but could/may come back. This also shows how Augusts lost her leg and only has one leg but still manages it and acts totally normal.
"But this too, was a side effect of dying: I could not run or dance or eat foods rich in nitrogen..."
This shows that Hazel is accepting that she can die from her disease.
"Gus flipped open the egg carton and handed an egg to Issac . " (227)
Gus , Hazel , and Issac are trying to have before something happens to any of them.
"I did. There were elm trees everywhere along the canals, and these seeds were blowing out of them. But they didn't look like seeds. They looked for all the world like miniaturized rose petals drained of their color. These pale petals were gathering in the wind like a flock of birds- Thousands of them, like a spring snowstorm."
This description by the author really gives a picture in your mind about what Hazel is seeing.
" You know we love you, Hazel but right now we just need to be a family.Gus agrees with that."(232) Hazel really wants to see Gus but she can't and underdstands because that had happened to her too.
"Two weeks later, I wheeled Gus across the art park toward Funky Bones."(233) That park is where augustus told Hazel they were going to amesterdam.
"Nah,nostalgia is a side effect of dying"(236) Hazel is always thinking negitive.
"LEEE-DUH-VIGH...There are two adolescent apparitions outside the door...They are Augustus and Hazel, the young fans with whom you have been corresponding. They are what-what? They- I thought they were in America! Yes but you invited them here, you will remember. Do you know why I left America, Lidewij? So that I would never again have to encounter Americans. But you are American. Incurably so, it seems, But as to those Americans, you must tell them to leave at once, that there has been a terrible mistake, that Van Houten was making a rhetorical offer to meet, not an actual one, that such offers must be read symbolically."
I think That Van Houten is very rude and that he should realize that he is. He can't invite people to see him and pay for their dinner and say that he does not want to meet them.
Augusts and Hazel went to visit the author Van Houten to find out the end of a book that they really wanted to know and he was being so rude to them. He was so mean and never gave them an answer. He was saying so many rude and obnoxious things to Hazel that I will never forget. (p.190)
Hazel things Van Houten is a huge embarrassment to a great family. Hazel was so mad so upset when they left his house.. which she had the right to be. They ended up going to the Anne Frank House after to take Houten and what just happened off their mind. There were so many steps and no elevator so it made it very hard for Hazel to climb all those steps but she ended up getting to the top everyone was really happy and proud of Hazel. (p.197)
Once Hazel reached the top of the Anne Frank House Hazel and Augusts started kissing and making out it was a surprise but a very happy moment for them. Everyone started clapping and cheering for them. They were all happy for them! I wasn't even there but I was still very proud and excited for them. It was a great time for Hazel and Augusts. (p.203-204)
"He was crying. I'd never heard him sob like this ."(243) Something is wrong with Augustus and Hazel wants to call 911 but augustus doesn't let her ,what should she do?
"but I want to do it myself. Do one little thing myself"(244) Augustus is sick and people are helping him to do things, but he just wanted to do this by himself.
"What happened to them?
No, I said. I pushed myself up off the couch. No, I understand that, but its impossible not to imagine a future for them. you are the most qualified person to imagine that future. Something happened to Anna's mother. She either got married or didn't. She either moved to Holland with the Dutch Tulip Man or didn't. She either got married. She either had more kids or didn't. I need to know what happens to her.
Van Houten pursed his lips. I regret that I cannot indulge your childish whims, but I refuse to pity you in the manner to which you are well accustomed"
I think that Van Houten is an Alcoholic and when he drinks he turns into a mean person and does not care about anyone's feelings other than his. Hazel is getting upset because she has been wanting answers to this book for so long and now she has the chance to get answers but she cant because Van Houten will not give them to her
"so what's it like?.Having your boyfriend die?"(302) Kaitlyn, Hazel's friend asked that question and I think Hazel wasn't happy to answer that question.
"We should celebrate this momentous anniversary"(306) Hazel's Mom and Dad think alot about the world outside them.
Hazel is a little depressed after Augustus's death she didn't seem happy to go see him at the grave.
Hazel had emailed van houten's assisaint about the letters augustus had send to him and she found the letters on the desk while van houten was drunk.(309)
when i read page 253, "The problem, of course, is that there's no way of knowing that your last good day is your Last Good Day." What Hazel is trying to say, is that since she has cancer, she never knows when her lungs are just gonna give out. She is saying that you never know when you are gonna live your last day, so you have to live everyday like it is your last.
when i read page 253, "The problem, of course, is that there's no way of knowing that your last good day is your Last Good Day." What Hazel is trying to say, is that since she has cancer, she never knows when her lungs are just gonna give out (she can pass away at any time). She is saying that you never know when you are gonna live your last day, so you have to live everyday like it is your last.
Hazels family and Augusts family all had dinner together. It was very nice but then all of the sudden a week later Augusts was admitted into the hospital over night because he had chest pain. Hazel visited him but it was also another challenge that they had to face and it was hard for all of them. (p.230)
Hazel also found out earlier that Augusts cancer came back and she was so sad it was devastating for her to hear that.. When Hazel walks into the hospital Augusts mom runs over to Hazel. Hazel asks how Augusts was but she said he had a hard night and hes not doing too well.. Hazel ends up finding out that hes going to need to be in a wheel chair for here out on.. It was very hard and sad for Hazel to hear that and for Augusts parents. Augusts will get better and be out of the hospital soon enough but he is much weaker and it is very sad. (p.232)
"I don't think I'm gonna make it to write your obituary, he said, instead of apologizing". (p.240) Augusts is telling Hazel that he doesn't think that hes going to make it much longer. It is awful for Hazel to here that from the love of her life Augusts... Hazel wanted him to write her a story/book but shes now getting the news how he might not make it in time... Augusts is almost dying and this is devastating for Hazel and for the readers to hear.
"...we walked upstairs...behind it was an even steeper set of stairs...Another staircase...essentially a glorified ladder...I got tot he threshold and looked up and figured I could not do it, but I also know the only way through was up..I began to climb the stairs, crawling up...I could breathe, but then faster because I knew I couldn't breathe..."
I think that it is amazing that hazel would not give up and would keep going up the stairs even though she could not breathe.
"But God, it was beautiful, the creek carving a path around the huge tree, a heron standing still at the water's edge, searching for a breakfast amid the millions of elm petals floating in the water."
You can really imagine what Hazel is seeing and it makes it really be beautiful.
Augustus has passed away, and Hazel just doesnt know how to take all of this in at once. All she wants to do is talk to him one more time. page 261-262.
"Is Gus awake? No, hes sleeping. Hes dying, said another. Hes dying the third one confirmed." (p.249) Hazel went to go visit Augusts when he came home from the hospital and Augusts sister was there with all her kids when Hazel walked in. The kids started to shout at Hazel about how Gus is dying.. I'm pretty sure Hazel knew that already but it was still very sad for Hazel to hear all that when she walked in.
"I always thought he could love me because he'd once been sick. Only now did it occur to me that maybe he still was."
I never thought that Augustus could get sick again because he had beaten the cancer and had been free of it for a long time. It also never occurred to me that Augustus
loved her because he had once been sick
"Just before you went to the ICU, I started to feel this ache in my hip...So I went for a PET scan...I lit up liked a Christmas Tree, Hazel Grace. The lining of my chest, my left hip, my liver, everywhere"
I can not believe that he has cancer again and this bad too. This is so sad
"I dont think your dying...I think you've just got a touch of cancer...He smiled. Gallows Humor. Im on a roller coaster that only goes up..."
I love that they can both be humorous about him having cancer and them not being so depressed about it.
when i read page 292, "Hazel, hi, it's Gus's dad. I found a, uh, black Moleskine notebook in the magazine rack that was near his hospital bed, I think near enough that he could have reached it."
Maybe the pages will give them more information about Gus.
Gus knew he was going to die sometime soon and that he didn't have that much time left. So Gus asked Hazel and Isaac to write him a eulogy for his funeral. Hazel wrote it right away and then before he died Gus wanted to have a mini ceremony to hear what they wrote for him. The day finally came when they had to read their eulogy to Gus. Isaac was really upset and started hysterically crying as he read it.. It was one of the saddest moments for all of them. (p.259)
"Augusts died eight days after his prefuneral, at memorial, in the ICU, when the cancer, which was made of him, finally stopped his heart, which was also made of him." (p.261) Hazel was in bed crying for days she was heart broken and couldn't get over him dying. I was really sad when I found out he died too I felt really bad for Hazel. It was awful...
"How are you feeling? Isaac asked
"everything tastes like pennies. Aside from that, I'm on a roller coaster that only goes up, kid, Gus answered
Augustus can still be sarcastic about his disease even when his in the worst condition
"I do, Augustus,
This is how John Green ends the book, (Hazel responding to Gus' letter).
They were at Augusts funeral and the author Peter Van Houten who was so rude to Augusts and Hazel showed up at Augusts funeral. When Hazel saw him she was shocked and surprised. He ended up getting into her car when Hazel was leaving to tell Hazel something but she didn't listen she was so upset at him of what he had done.. she screamed at him and drove away. It was a big deal that he came all the way from Amsterdam for his funeral. (p.271)
The Author Peter Van Houston apologized to Hazel which he really did owe her a apology. He told Hazel how he was a small, lonely, had an alcoholic problem man who had one person who would hang out with him and he paid her to hang out with him... He has a really sad life but that didn't mean he should be so mean and rude to Hazel. He did apologize and I think that made it a little better. (p.280)
There was a journal that Augusts parents found and he wrote in the first four pages. He wrote them to Hazel. Hazel is trying to find how where he could have left them for her. She went on a little mission on all the spots she thought he could have left them. (p.291)
The book ended with Hazel reading the 4 pages that Augusts wrote to Hazel. It was the cutest letter I have ever read and it ends with I liked my choices I hope she likes hers.. Hazel loved her choice of being with Augusts. They were meant to be and I loved how the book ended! (p.309-313)
The author of The Fault In Our Stars is John Green. The point of view that John Green wrote the book in is first person because Hazel is telling the story.
Hazel has a friend named Kaitlyn
"Augustus died eight days after his prefuneral"
This is how the author announces the death of Augustus Waters
"...Written by someone I'd never heard of. In fact, almost all the wall posts, which arrived nearly as fast as I could read them, were written by people I'd never met and whom he'd never spoken about, people who were extolling his various virtues now that he was dead, even though I knew for a fact they hadn't seen him in months and had made no effort to visit him.
These are probably people who were from his school that he used to go to and people who were on his sports teams.
Hazel has written Dozens of letter to her favorite book author Peter Van Houten because she has questions to ask him about what happends after the end of the book but he isn't answering to any of her letters.
Hazel was waiting for Augustus to call because it was his turn to call but he wasn't calling.
So many people like the Fault In Our Stars because John Green writes in a eloquent way. His sentences are smooth so people could understand his book.
Augustus wrote a letter to Peter Van Houten and he wrote back. Then Hazel got so excited and got the email address from Augustas and wrote a email to Peter Van Houten. P.69
Peter Van Houten wrote back to Augustus 4 days after he wrote to him but two days after Hazel wrote him a letter he still didn't respond to her email. Hazel was worried.
Theories and Conclusions Piece
John Green uses powerful dialogue to help the readers remember important and memorable moments in life. The Fault In Our Stars by John Green is about a girl named Hazel, who terminal lung cancer. She meets a boy named Augustus Waters at a support group where the doctor sent her to get social with other people. Hazel got mad because he had put a cigarette in his mouth, but to him it’s a metaphor. ”You put the thing that does the killing right between your teeth, but you don’t give it the power to do it’s killing”(Augustus Pg 50). After Gus took her to his house and introduced his parents. After he took her to his room. They talked. Hazel and Gus both share this love for reading. The book that Hazel shares with Gus is called An Ampieral Affliction. She gives him the book because she is amazed by the author’s eloquent writing in the book. After hazel gives gus her book Gus gives her his book. His book is about blood and zombies, but she still read the book , which was really good because she had read the rest of the series. This an example of their connection. Together, they go to Amersterdam in New York . There they find out that they are meant to be together. Before they leave Augustus finds out that his body made of cancer and that he is really sick . He didn’t want to tell Hazel because she was going to get worried about him. But she found out “The world …. is not a wish-granting factory”(Augustus pg 214) and they ride this journey together no matter what. This demonstartion shows the characters really care about each other. When they got home, Gus was not ravenous at all everytime he ate he threw up. Augustus ended up in the hospital 3 times and 1 of those times , which was eight days later , Augustus’s heart had stopped and Hazel’s world had fallen apart. But hazel got through it with her family. This book is so sad but has so many emotions inside of it. A movie was made about this book named the same as the book.
Here are some examples from The Fault In Our Stars :
Ex 1:“ The world … is not wish-granting factory”(Augustus Pg 214)
Ex 2:” I am in love with you and I know it’s just a shout into the void and I know that oblivion is inevitable and I am love with you” (Augustus Pg 153)
Ex 3:”You put the thing that does the killing right between your teeth, but you don’t give it the power to do it’s killing”(Augustus Pg 50)
Ex 4:” You gave me a forever within the numbered days and I’m grateful” (Hazel Pg 260)
Ex 5:”Some infinties are bigger than other infinities”(Hazel Pg 233)
Ex 6:”I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity”(Hazel Pg 260)
All of these examples show how John Green uses the powerful dialogue. I like the way that the characters talk because it shows their personalities , which think is amazing how an author can explain a character through talking . Example 1 is where Augustus is telling (in Amesterdam) Hazel that he has cancer everywhere in his body and that he’s dying. Augustus says”The world...is not wish-granting factory.” This quote proves my theory because it makes the reader think about things that just don’t happen in life. Example 2 is when Augustus and Hazel are reading a book and augustus is saying “I am in love with youand I know it’s just a shout into the void and I know that oblivion is inevitable and I am love with you” and Hazel didn’t know what to say back. This quote proves my theory because it shows the readers that if you need to say something , you need to say it. Example 3 is where Augustus and Hazel meet for the first time and Augustus puts a cigarette in his mouth and explains that he has never smoked. This quote proves my theory because it shows the readers that you have something that can kill , but you can never give it the power to kill you. Example 4 is where Augustus asked Hazel and Issac(friend) to make a eugilogy to say at his own furneral. This quote proves my theory because it shows that if you get a limited amount of time to do something you should be grateful for that time. Example 5 is where Hazel takes Augustus to the funky bones in the park , she says that to Augustus. This quote proves my theory because it emaphazize that some things are more important than others. Last example is also where Hazel goes to say her eugilogy for Augustus. This quote proves my theory because it demonstrates that you should be thankful for the things youn get in life.
"...I found a, uh, black Moleskin notebook in the magazine rack that was near his hospital bed...there's no writing in the notebook. all the pages are blank. But the first -I think three or four- the first few pages are torn out of the notebook. We looked through the house but couldn't find the pages."
I think that Augustus sent the pages to Van Houten to write another book off them for Hazel.
Hazel's phone rang and it was Augustus he was waiting for Hazel to come home. He asked hazel "Wanna go on a picnic?" and Hazel said yes. p.82
Hazel,Augustus, and Hazel's mom might go to Amsterdam p.92
Hazel was looking up Augustus's ex girlfriend online and was reading the comments that people left about her. p 97
Knowing you are going to die is a powerful incentive for living life well. In John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, characters Hazel and Augustus are diagnosed with cancer. Hazel has been struggling with this problem for many years now, while Augustus was free of cancer, then later gets diagnosed again. In their knowing that they will have short lives, they do as much as possible to live their lives to the fullest.
As introduced in the beginning, Hazel is one of the two main characters in the book. She was diagnosed with cancer at a very young age, I believe around 13 years old. She is still fighting to survive this very long battle, and never gave up in difficult times. When her mom forces her to a support group to talk about her problem (cancer), she is introduced to Augustus Waters.
Augustus Waters is the other main
character introduced in the beginning of the book. Augustus thinks Hazel, (or as he calls her, Hazel Grace) is the most beautiful creature in the world. Otherwise known as Gus, Augustus Waters is trying to get Hazel to like him. Later on in the book, they become a couple and go away to meet the author of Hazels favorite book.
Throughout the book, Hazel and Gus just keep getting closer and closer. They do many things together in their very short lives. Even though both Gus and Hazel go through many tough times throughout their bumpy ride; they always stuck together. Never giving up on each other, they managed to do many things before one of them sadly passes away.
As talked about earlier, Gus used his cancer wish to let Hazel meet the author of her favorite book. Hazel has read this but around 10 times and was really excited to meet the author. This is one of the highlights of Hazel and Gus' lives. Hazel believes that she should think of everyday as if it is her last good day. Which basically means that you never know when you are going to die, so live everyday like you are going to die the next day. You should live everyday like you are going to die tomorrow, is what Hazel is trying to say.
Knowing that you are going to die is a very hard challenge to go through. Okay, just imagine you, yourself living right now knowing that you have such a terrible illness that your lungs could just give out tomorrow, today, in 5 minutes. How do you feel? It is very hard to deal with, but Hazel goes through this sensation, she deals with the pain. Hazel goes through this through her mind everyday, but still manages to do all of the great marks on the world.
In conclusion we all know that Hazel and Gus develop a relationship together, and never leave each others side. Through their long but hard journeys to fight cancers they achieve many great things but also hit many bumps throughout the way.
Hazel woke up her parents because she screamed. Hazel needed to go to the hospital. Her dad drove her with her mom. Hazel woke up in the icu and she knew she was there because there was beeping and she knew she was alone . " I woke up in the icu. I could tell I was in the Icu because I didn't have my own room, and because there was so much beeping, and because I was alone." P.106
Hazel had a cancer meeting with the doctors, social workers, and physical therapists and everyone talks abut Hazel's situation. Hazel asked her doctor, Dr.Maria if it would be okay if she went to Amsterdam and at first Dr.Maria said ¨why not¨ but then she said ¨ It would increase some risks she acknowledged, but then turned to me and said but its your life.¨ p.117 In the car home Hazel's parents said that Hazel would not go to Amsterdam.
Hazel got a email from peter Van Houten's assistant and she was confused. Hazel screamed for her mom and she said" Can you tell the Genies and tell them the trip is off? I just got a email from Peter Van Houten's assistant. She thinks we're coming"
She pursed her lips and squinted past me.
"What" I asked
"Im not suppose to tell you until your father gets home."
"What?" I asked again.
"Trip's on," she said finally. "Dr.Maria called us last night and made a convincing case that you to live your__"
"MOM,I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!" I shouted. P.127
Hazel Is going to Amsterdam!!!!
Theory: Breaking the trust of a reader is the biggest risk a writer can take.
The book that I read was Fault In Our Stars by, John Green. My theory for this book is by breaking the trust of a reader it is the biggest risk a writer can take. I feel very strongly about this theory because when writers create and write books they are putting themselves in a very risky situation. They can either be very successful or fail horribly. My theory perfectly explains the book I just read because in the book the writer takes a huge chance and changes the whole story on the readers. It was very sad but also very successful for the writer at the same time. For example "Augustus died eight days after his pre funeral, at memorial, in the ICU, when the cancer, which was made of him, finally stopped his heart, which was also made of him" (p.261). This shows how this was a devastating shock in the book but he did it very successfully. This proves my theory because it shows how the writer broke the trust of the reader. It shows how the writer throws a heartbreaking thing at you while you're reading. The author ended up doing it successfully but if he didn't it was have been a complete fail on the writers part. When Hazel met Gus at support group he told her how he use to have cancer and his went away. Eventually Gus’s cancer came back and he got weaker and weaker. It made him very depressed which affected Hazel as well. After Gus was home from the hospital Hazel went to visit him. "Is Gus awake? No, hes sleeping. Hes dying, said another. He's dying the third one confirmed” (249). Augustus sister was there with all her kids when Hazel walked in. The kids started to shout at Hazel about how Gus is dying.. I'm pretty sure Hazel knew that already but it was still very sad for Hazel to hear all that when she walked in. Augusts wasn’t doing well. Hazel knew that he wasn’t but hearing that from the kids made it even worse for Hazel. This also represents how it proves my theory because it demonstrates how the reader is trusting the writer to basically hold their hand while there reading the book. The reader is trusting the writer not to let go of them and when John Green had the kids run up to Hazel and say how Augusts is dying it broke the trust between the reader and writer. The reader ended up being very surprised and didn’t know if they should trust the writer or not. Another example of how the writer breaks the trust of the reader is when Hazel woke up in the middle of the night and she was screaming. Something went wrong and she had a really really bad pain in her brain/head. Her parents came running into her room and they got in the car to go to the hospital to see what was going on. But the saddest part is that Hazel said she tells herself everyday that she may not make it and she has to keep fighting. Hazel ended up being fine and she just had something little go wrong but she has to live with the fact that anything can happen at any moment and it is really sad. (p.105) The writer surprises the reader at so many different points in the book. They aren’t good surprises they are horrifying. They are bad things that happen to the characters in the book. There are so many examples of how the writer breaks the trust of the reader in this book and that part especially describes it because the writer specifically makes something bad happen to Hazel to shock and make everyone worry about Hazel. They do this on purpose to make the book more interesting and to intrigue the readers. In this book John Green outstandingly breaks the trust of a reader. To conclude this book has taught me that breaking the trust of a reader is the biggest risk a writer can take while writing a book. They can either be tremendously successful or fail horribly.
The Fault In Our Stars by John Green is the book that I have chose for this assignment. My theory is, because the the book is written in first person, the reader is able to understand and connect with the character's emotions. In the book the main character is a 16 year-old girl named Hazel Grace Lancaster. She suffers from the side effects of terminal cancer in the lungs, she uses an oxygen tank to breath without it she can breath but not really. She has to take it everywhere and she struggles with doing that. The book reveals Hazel’s feelings and thoughts in the portion of her life that occurs in the book. Most of the thoughts that she has in the beginning of the book are about death and cancer, and toward the middle of the book her thoughts turn to thoughts of her in love and happy, and less about cancer effecting her. An example of her thinking about death and cancer would be when Hazel explains, "But this too, was a side effect of dying: I could not run or dance or eat foods rich in nitrogen..." (pg 110). This shows that Hazel thinks that she is going to die, she is constantly thinking about her cancer, and she can’t do anything normal people can do when they are healthy. She really wishes that she will get better. My quote supports this theory because when Hazel explains how she thinks she is going to die because of her cancer side effects, you can understand that she is in a very difficult position where she is trying to get better.
Hazel is planning this trip to Amsterdam with her friend Augustus Waters to meet Mr. Peter Van Houten the author of the imperial affliction (their favorite book but mostly Hazel's), they have so many questions to ask him about things that he did not answer in the book. She was Jaunty and jumping with a smile on her face. Augustus uses his cancer wish for him, Hazel, and Hazel’s mother to go to Amsterdam together. Soon after Hazel wakes up in the middle of the night screaming because she could not breath and she was in so much pain. Her parents rushed her to the hospital, and the doctors figured out her lungs were filling up with fluid. They told her that they were worried that this may happen again and that her medication is possibly no longer working, so they told her she can not go to Amsterdam at all. Hazel was so sad that she could not go she has been waiting for long to get her questions answered about what happens to the people after the book by Van Houten. Soon after all of this she is able to go because her mother and father arranged for her to have someone in Amsterdam in case anything went wrong. “ If I could stay alive for a week, I’d know the unwritten secrets of Anna’s mother and the Dutch Tulip Man Guy.” My theory proves all of the quotes and explanations because Hazel explaining the story in the first person in the story, really tells you how she is feeling about what she is going through even though sometimes she doesn’t flat out just tell you how she feeling it’s as if she is.
Hazel is not a normal teenager and usually never gets noticed by boys because of her big oxygen tank. Augustus changed everything and loved Hazel for her inner beauty.
Its a really good book so far. I love how it uses strong words to express ideas
"I like my choices. I hope she likes hers. I do Augustus. I do" (313) I thought that this was a very strong ending that John Green wrote. He was expressing Hazel's thoughts and emotions strongly.
Hazel is dying, but she is trying to stay strong for her mom. She wants to make sure her parents don't get hurt when she dies, so she tries to live an easy and simple life. But, when Augustus Waters comes into her life, her world brightens up and she finds out what a normal teenage life can bring.
i really like the peaceful vibe of the events of this book
This is my first legit comment
So Augustus and Hazel just boarded the plane. I really think its cool how they both put on the same movie and made the volume play at the exact same time.
“I couldn’t be mad at him for even a moment, and only now that I loved a grenade did I understand the foolishness of trying to save others from my own impending fragmentation: I couldn’t unlove Augustus Waters. And I didn’t want to.”(214) In the beginning of the book, when Augustus liked Hazel, she wouldn’t go out with him because she thought she was a “grenade.” While everyone dies one day, Hazel realized and acknowledged that her number of days alive would be shorter than most. Now that Augustus is a “grenade” too, she realizes that she shouldn’t have stopped allowing people to love her because her days were numbered unfairly. Instead of focusing on the fact that one day sooner than most she (and now they) would die and people will be hurt, she realizes that what matters most is taking the days you have left and making them count. This too is why she cannot be angry at Augustus. She also realizes what it feels like to be on the other side of the situation and sees how foolish it is to try to stop anyone from falling in love with someone because he/she knows that that person is ill and might die.
“‘That’s the thing about pain, it demands to be felt.’”(63) When Augustus says this he is quoting a book that he and Hazel really enjoy. He is talking about Isaac at this point in the book, but the author is setting the stage. Both of the characters understand that pain is a strong emotion and that if buried, it will destroy and that it simply cannot be ignored any other way. Therefore, pain needs to be experienced. Later at the end of the book, Hazel uses the same quote. She is talking about a different pain then though. She is talking about Augustus’ death. Using this quote at the end is almost comforting to her because she knows from Augustus that she has to go through the pain.
“‘Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.’”(260) Hazel is really upset about Gus’ condition, as she should be. Her boyfriend is dying of cancer and any day could be their last good day together on Earth. The author that used to be Hazel’s favorite taught both her and Augustus an important lesson. He made them realize that there are many infinities in the world, but some are larger than others. Hazel says that there are infinite numbers between 0 and 1, but there is an even larger amount of infinite numbers between 0 and 2. Hazel is very grateful for the little infinity that she shared together with Gus. While she wishes she wishes it was longer, she feels so happy to have had it at all. Even though it was short, Hazel and Gus made their little infinity count.
On page 261, i learned that Augustus waters had died of his cancer. I am a little upset, because throughout most of the book it seemed as if everything was going to be okay with him. It is a magor turning point in the book and it made it very inspirational.
At Augustus' funeral, I was a little shocked that Peter Van Houten came. When he did, I was really upset that he actually had the nerve to tell Hazel that he was going to fake pray. I realize that Van Houten is just a sad, drunk man with barely a heart but still that was very rude.
So, basically Hazel found out that Gus had written her an ending to An Imperial affection after all. Now she has to go to Gus' house to find it on the computer. Hazel walked inside, and started having dinner with his parents. I am really surprised that they seemed so quiet at the table, even though Gus has passed. I wish instead, they had been very happy that Gus' pain has ended and that they had happily eaten their dinner.
It turns out that Hazel can not find the ending of An Imperial Affection that Gus has wrote. This makes me very upset, because he didnt even live to write it. I dont blame him or anything, but I feel like it would have made Hazel very happy to at least hold the ending in her hands. It would have made her very happy. I can still tell, however that something big will happen as a finale of this book.
I have just found out that maybe Gus DID write the ending after all. The book said that in the hospital, Gus' mom and dad found a black and white marble notebook. The notebook is blank, but there are 3 pages pulled out of it. This must mean that somewhere, the ending of the book must be hidden. I really do hope that Hazel finds these pages, because it will mean that she has a great memory to keep forever from Augustus.
I noticed that the narrator is the main character hazel and its written in first person. (12)
I noticed that from the minute Augustus and hazel saw each other they had a connection. (13)
It turns out that Gus had not used those pages for the ending to An imperial affection. Instead he used them to send Van Houten a letter. The letter basically told VanHouten that he needed to write the ending for Hazel and how that book means the world to her. The book ends with the letter Augustus sent to VanHouten after he (gus) died. (Hazel found this letter in Houten's mail pile
I noticed that augustes is very complimentary of hazel. (17)
whenever someone asks hazel about something related to her cancer she has a very depressed look on her face. (17)
Hazel is very depressed and wont stop thinking about death (3).
Hazel just gave a really big speech about how people are going to die at some point. I think the author did that to show her feelings about the world and herself (12).
Hazel uses a lot of curse words in her voice. I think the author does that to express her personality (25).
Gus and Hazel use very soficticaded words when they talk and think. I think the author does that to express their personalitys better (36).
I think John Green chose "Imperial Affliction" because it relates to Hazel. It relates to Hazel because the main character in the book also has cancer (48).
I think that someone is going to die in the book in the end because in the book Hazel likes it connects to their life- Hazel and Gus. The girl has cancer. She has cancer. Someone dies. He or she has to die (64).
I think the book is called "The Fault In Our Stars" because Kaitlin was talking about how there was this one bad thing in the relationship with her boyfriend. I think that that is going to be how Hazel and Gus's relationship is going to be but they won' t break up because of it (96).
Why does Gus have a box of cigarettes but never lights them? My guess would be why others smoke the only difference is Gus doesn't give it the power to kill.
I think it is called "The Fault In Our Stars" because in a letter the author wrote he said,"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars / but in ourselves" (111).
I think that they are going to date and something tragic is going to happen at the end because in ¨An Imperial Affliction¨ the girl dies (155).
How is Gus not being awkward around Hazel if they both know he likes her? How does he stay cool? (164).
"Even though it was the (italics) red (no italics) light district, the glow coming from up there was an eerie sort of green"(170). The author uses italics to emphasis meaning and to show ironic situations.
I think that Hazel is going to ask Gus out because she wanted to make sure he would be okay with her dying. So she is into him now and ready to date him (174).
I think Hazel and Gus are dating because she told him he didn't want to break his heart so he said,"' Oh, I wouldn't mind, Hazel Grace. It would be a privilege to have my heart broken by you'"(176). It's unclear that they are dating but I think the reader does that on purpose to show mystery.
I think the author made Van Houten leave out that part because at the end of this book it's going to leave out things about the characters (195).
Gus is feeling bad (like sick) and I think that he is going to hurt himself even more from his cancer (220).
I think the author makes it really realistic that Isaac is blind because when Gus is talking he has to pause and tell him where he is and what to do (229).
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
