Huckleberry Finn is a bad hated person and Tom is under strict orders not to play with him, "So he played with him every time he got a chance" (39).
The author shows us Toms in love by his actions. When Tom was alone with Becky he, "... Kissed the red lips". Now to Tom he is "married" to Becky.
I think Becky is sad that Tom used to like Amy Lawrence because while Tom and Becky were in a relationship, Becky thought Tom still liked Amy Lawrence and "The child began to cry" (49).
Tom and Huck have to keep a secret about the Injun Joe killing the doctor or else he will think potter told the secret and he will get hanged so Huck told Tom, "...We got to keep mum" (61).
I think Tom feels really guilty because everybody thinks potter killed the doctor and not Injun Joe because every night "Tom's fearful secret and gnawing conscience disturbed his sleep for as much as a week after [the murder]... (67).
Every night tom wakes up Sid and one morning Sid finally said, "Tom, you pitch around and talk in your sleep so much that you keep me awake half the time," (67).
Tom has his mind off of the assaination of the doctor because lately, "Becky Thatcher has stopped coming to school" (69).
I think Aunt Polly loves Sid more than Tom because when Tom was sick Aunt Polly didn't want to help but, "If it had been Sid, she would of had no misgivings to alloy her delight" (70).
Tom didn't like the medicine pain killer so to trick Aunt Polly into making it look like Tom had the medicine he "...pried [peter] his [cats] mouth open and poured down the pain killer (70).
Tom and his friend Joe "... Made a new compact to stand by each other and be brothers and never separate till death relieved them of their troubles" (73).
Since Aunt Polly has been a nag to Tom and Joe harpers Mom had been a nag to Joe, both boys with Huckleberry decided to leave town and Tom "... Consented to be a pirate" (73).
After Tom left his home for her island he decides to take a stealthy visit home and when he got there he, "... Softly lift he latch [of the door to Aunt Polly's house]" (84).
I think when everybody thought Tom was dead, the things everybody was saying while Tom was spying on them made Tom "...More in pity of himself than anybody else" (85).
After a couple days the 3 boys, Tom, Huck, and Joe are home sick, but Tom is trying to pretend he is not homesick by saying, "Go 'long home and get laughed at. Oh, you're a nice party" (89).
Huck and Joe were about to leave the island to go home and Tom didn't want them so Tom tells Huck "He wanted to learn to smoke, now" (90) and now Joe does too.
Soon enough, Joe and Huck become bored of being pirates and then Tom introduces of not being pirates, "...And being Indians for a change" (93).
While the funeral was happening out of nowhere Tom, Huck, and Joe opened the church door and, "...Came marching up the aisle" (96).
Aunt Polly and Joe Harpers mom were so happy when they saw that Joe and Tom were alive that they, "... That they threw themselves upon heir restored ones, [and] smothered them with kisses" (96).
I think Tom is happy with the choice of seeing his aunt and not staying at the island because when everybody was so glad to see him he,"... Confessed in his heart that this was the greatest moment of his life" (97).
The night Tom took a stealthy visit home is the night he told Aunt Polly he dreamed about. Every thing that that happened that night was what Tom told Aunt Polly and to everything Tom told her she said, "Well, so we did" (99).
Tom was flirting with Amy and paying no mind to Becky, so Becky starts looking at a picture book with Alfred Temple and, " Jealousy ran red-hot through Tom's veins" (102).
Aunt Polly found out that there was no dream and Tom actually visited her house and Aunt Polly told Tom, "...I've a notion to skin you alive!" (105).
Aunt Polly didn't believe Tom that he visited only to tell her he wasn't dead. So the proof was in Toms jacket pocket and when she saw it she said, "I could forgive the boy, now, if he committed a million sins!" (106).
Tom finally apologized to Becky and said, "...I'm so sorry" (107).
Becky Thatcher didn't accept Toms apology and said to him, "I'll never speak to you again" (107)
Tom was making a "Give me liberty or give me death" speech with fully confidence but in the end he lost confidence "...And he was like to choke" (112).
Tom joined the Cadets because he liked, "...the showy character of their 'regalia" (116). But then he left because he could not keep up with the demands of the club.
Tom and Huckleberry's conscience seems to be getting the better of them because they are having a discussion about Muff Potters fate and it started by Tom asking, "Huck, have you ever told anybody about--- that ?" (119).
Everyday Tom and Huck went over to the jail, "...and gave Potter some tobacco and matches" (120) to make him feel better.
Tom really isn't a bad person because "Tom went home miserable" (121) after his visit with Miff Potter.
Tom saved Muff Potter from dyeing once he told the whole court how "Injun Joe jumped with the knife and---" (123). It wasn't Potter who killed the doctor it was Injun Joe.
One day Tom decided to look for buried treasure and wanted Huck to come with him. So, "Tom took him to a private place and opened the matter to him confidentially" (125).
While Tom and Huck were in the haunted house two people walked in so they hid, and by the voice of one of the men, "It was Injun Joe's!"(133) which made the boys very scared"
I think Tom and Huck are so scared of Injun Joe that when Tom is exploring in Injun Joes lair, he sees a light and immediately said, "Run, run for your life!" (140) to Huck.
I think Huck has a heart because Huck is following Injun Joe and the other man to Widow Douglas's house and Huck thinks they might murder her and, "Then he remembered that Widow Douglas has been kind to m more than once" (146) so he must save her.
After the school trip in the cave, Aunt Polly was looking for Tom and couldnt find him so she said,"Joe Harper, have you seen Tom anywhere" (153).
Becky thinks she will die with Tom because they are stuck in the cave but, "Tom begged her to pluck up hope again" (158).
After being stuck in a cave for a couple of days people have actually came close to Tom and Becky and both of them heard that "There was a sound like the faintest" (160) and their hopes began to rise again.
I think that Tom is extremely scared now because when he lifted a rock to get somewhere, he saw Injuns Joes body and "...was paralyzed ;he could not move" (161).
Everybody is happy now because Tom and Becky were in a cave for so long but now everybody is saying, "Turn out! Turn out! They're found! They're found!" (163).
Tom is going to go back in the cave again with Huck, but this time hes going because Injun Joe has a lot of money and his, "...moneys in the cave"(168).
Tom and Huck kept on digging and soon enough Tom kept on digging until he saw,"...the treasure box ,sure enough, occupying a small little cavern" (171).
Judge Thatcher is very impressed with Tom because, "He said that no common place boy would ever have got his daughter out of the cave" (176).
Mark Twain creates two characters that are complete opposites, both inside and out, in order to warn us not to judge on a surface level. Tom the main character in the book is a bit rebel minded but has good intentions. For example, Tom left his home to a deserted island with his friends because he was mad at his aunt. After a couple of days, Tom got a little homesick and decided to take a stealthy visit home. While he was there he saw his whole family sitting with grief in the living room. 10 minutes afterwards while everybody was in the living room, Aunt Polly was in her room saying a prayer. Tom was underneath her bed. Then when Tom was about to leave through the window, he realized Aunt Polly had fallen asleep. So before he left, he kissed her faded lips and left the house (88). From this kiss we can see that Tom has regard for Aunt Polly’s feelings. Another example of Tom’s good intentions is when he took that stealthy visit home, he wanted to leave a note to Aunt Polly. Tom wanted to let her know he wasn’t dead and he was just playing pirates. Aunt Polly shouldn’t be sad (106). Tom’s intention was not to leave Aunt Polly suffering, he wanted to send her a message that he should be treated better. Also Tom liked this girl named Becky Thatcher and she liked him too. So they “married” each other. Then Tom was flirting with a girl named Amy Lawrence and jealousy ran through Becky’s veins so she started to flirt with a boy named Alfred Temple. So one day Becky ripped a page of the school masters book. When the school master found out he was vexed and started to question his students on who ripped his book. When he questioned Becky, her face was white with terror but before she could Say anything Tom sprang to his feet and said “I done it” (110). Then Tom took the whipping for Becky. The author shows us that Tom is a noble person because even when he and Becky were mad with each other, Tom still took her whipping. Also one time a killer named Injun Joe framed a man named Muff Potter for killing a doctor when really Injun Joe killed him. Tom and Huckleberry were the only people to see what actually happened. So Muff Potter was going to get the death penalty unless he could prove himself innocent. Tom and Huckleberry wanted to save Muff Potter. The only thing was that they were scared to rat out Injun Joe because they were afraid he was going to kill them. So on the day of the court case Muff called Thomas Sawyer to the stand. Tom was really scared. However his conscience gets the better of him so he tells the judge what really happened. Then, “Quick as lighting [Injun Joe] the half-breed sprang for a window, tore his way through all opposers, and was gone! (123). Tom is risking his life by revealing the truth.
Tom’s half brother Sid is a goody-Two- shoes. On the outside Sid is well groomed, well dressed, and well spoken. But on the inside Sid is an evil child. For example Tom skipped school to go swimming. Aunt Polly sewed Tom’s collar closed with white thread to prevent him from going swimming. Then Tom went swimming and resewed his collar with black thread so it looked like he didn’t go swimming. when he got home, Aunt Polly checked Tom and was happy to see his collar was still sewed. Then Sid pointed out how there was black thread sewed on his shirt instead of white thread. Tom almost got away from going swimming but Sid ratted him out. Also another example is when Tom stole sugar from the sugar bowl, Aunt Polly whacked him. when Aunt Polly turned around, Sid knocked the sugar bowl to the floor to the ground and it shattered. Aunt Polly thought it was Tom and whacked him again. This is an evil thing Sid did and then Tom got blamed for it. Also The time Tom left the island to take a stealthy visit home, Sid said a very mean thing. While Tom was spying on the family in the living room, Sid said, “I hope better off where he is, but if he’d been better in some ways” (85). Even when Tom was supposedly dead, Sid still said a jerky thing about Tom.
As mentioned above we can see that Tom is a unconventional character. From his looks you may conclude that he is a bad person. In the same way, because of the way Sid looks, you may conclude that he is a fine boy. In both cases you would be wrong . However Tom has a kind soul while Sid has poor intentions. Therefore we can see, the authors usage of these two characters helps to give us a vivid view into building Toms character.
