Jerry Spinelli creates unusual characters to show us that being unusual is not a bad thing, it’s actually wonderful. he uses eloquence in his writing, so he persuades us that this is true. Leo Borlock is a typical eleventh grader. he has lots of friends, he’s popular, and his life seems perfect… until stargirl came. Stargirl Caraway has been home schooled her whole life, and is now going to start tenth grade at Mica high school. Stargirl’s real name is Susan, but she “changed” her name, because she wanted to choose a name that fit her one of a kind personality. Stargirl is different, “She laughed when there was no joke. she danced when there was no music. she had no friends, yet she was the friendliest person in school ” (15). This quote emphasizes that even though she is not like everyone else, she is still special in her own way. The characters in Stargirl do not realize this, and they do not appreciate her. “she was elusive. she was today. she was tomorrow. we did not know what to make of her. in our minds we tried to pin her to corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew” (15). this realization demonstrates that other people think that stargirl is difficult to understand. they tried to keep her still, but she just kept on flying, without anyone holding her back. later on in the book, Leo and Stargirl start dating. Since nobody at the school likes stargirl, so they started to shun her. when people found out that they were dating, they started to shun Leo too. Leo had a very serious talk with stargirl, and said that he just wanted her to be like everyone else. The next day, Stargirl wasn't stargirl Caraway anymore. She was now Susan Caraway. Susan was “magnificently, wonderfully, gorgeously, ordinary” (139-140). but being nonchalant was not all that fun. everybody was shunning her, and her best friend, dori dilson, left her. “ever since i became susan, she thinks i betrayed myself. she just doesn’t understand how important it is to be popular” (146). this quote emphasizes that she was so ravenous to become popular, that she would lose her own best friend. Stargirl has something called a happy wagon. it is a wooden toy wagon that stargirl uses to emphasize her feelings. when something makes her happy, she puts a pebble in the wagon. if she’s unhappy, she takes a pebble out. there are twenty pebbles in all. When stargirl was herself, she had eighteen pebbles in her happy wagon. but when she became susan, “ there were only two stones in it.” (143) this quote emphasizes that stargirl would give up her jaunty self, to be miserable, and make leo happy. At the end of this book, stargirl became herself again, Dori Dilson was Magnanimous toward stargirl, so their friendship continued, and one day, stargirl mysteriously vanished. “nothing had changed. everything had changed.” (176) stargirl made an impact on a lot of people in mica. Stargirl was “beautiful.interesting.different.regal” (169). So sometimes, being unusual, is the best thing you can possibly be.
example 1: “beautiful.interesting.different.regal.” (169)
example 2: “ she laughed when there was no joke. she danced when there was no music. She had no friends, yet she was the friendliest person in school. (15)
example 3: “she was elusive. she was today. she was tomorrow. we did not know what to make of her. in our minds we tried to pin her to corkboard like a butterfly, but the pin merely went through and away she flew. (15)
example 4: “ ever since i became susan, she thinks i betrayed myself. she just doesn’t understand how important it is to be popular.” (146)
example 5: “ there were only two stones in it.” (143)
example 6: “magnificently, wonderfully, gorgeously, ordinary.” (139-140)
This is a book great, it shows how one girl changed everyone.
page 76, through actions, the narator describes the feelings of the kids at lunch when stargirl walks by. The kids feel nervous, scared, and a bit uncomfortable.
"I was floating. I floated up the white light that washed my sheets and slept on the moon." Page 86. This shows a great amount of detail on the authors part, describing the emotion of the character.
"Your in love, dude!" Page 85. This shows that since the character is in love, there can be a major turning point later on in the book.
"After school we had found eachother, not that we had to look." Page 85. Now that the two characters have come into "eye" contact with eachother, SOMETHING BIG might happen.
"Meanwhile, Stargirl was involved in a tournament of her own, the oratorical contest." PAGE 106. Stargirl is part of a tournament that I do not know what means. Maybe I will find out what this means later on in the book, and maybe it will impact Stargirl.
I have a prediction about what is gonna happen in the book. I think that soon Stargirl, with all of the things she has accomplished, she will create a major impact on the world.
Who gave Stargirl the porcupine necktie? (2)
I am on page 10 and I am confused about who the narrator of the story is. I know it is not Stargirl, but who is it?
Everyone thought that Stargirl wasn't real just because she dressed very weird and acted strangely. A lot of people judged her. (10-11)
"Hillari paused. Her eyes narrowed. She jabbed her finger in Stargirl's face. Don't try singing to me, I'm warning you." (27) It seems like Hillari is one of the only people who has a problem with Stargirl.
"Kevin looked up at Stargirl and pointed at me and saidwhat everyone must have been thinking" "Why him?"...She tugged on my earlobe and said, "He's cute." (29) I think Stargirl has a very open personality, so she is not afraid of saying she likes Leo in front of the whole grade.
Stargirl is now one of the most popular girls in the school. I think she is, because even if someone looks at her as being different or even a little crazy she ignores them. She is her own person and she does not want to change that. (36)
"we expected top ninety percent for the Stargirl show. But I had a secret: I wished no one would watch." (57) I think this quote shows that Leo likes Stargirl, because he does not want her to make a fool of herself on the hot seat show, since she is not popular anymore.
Hillari was being rude to Stargirl and made her cry almost. Hillari was saying that Stargirl doesn't like them and she should just leave there school. This hurt Stargirl's feelings a lot. (67)
Stargirl seems like a very caring and thoughful person, because even though all of those people said mean comments to her the day before, she still have everyone little chocolate hearts for Valentine's Day. (68)
"A baseball bat could not have hit me harder than that smile did." (76-77) I think that this quote shows that now that Leo actually looked at Stargirl he realized that she is a "normal" 10th grader, and that there is no reason to be afraid of her.
Stargirl wants Leo to like her. (80)
Nobody is talking to Leo anymore, because nobody likes Stargirl and Stargirl and Leo like eachother. (97)
"Whose affection do you value more, hers or the others?...I wasn't sure I understood the Señor any more than I understood Archie half the time...I realized that in fact I understood the question perfectly, I just didn't want to answer it." (104-105)
I predict that Leo would be on Stargirl's side, because it seems like he really likes her and is always trying to defend her. I think that he doesn't care if people make fun of him for liking Stargirl.
It seems like Leo likes having Stargirl in his life because she makes him wonder about the world and even make a simple walk on a nearby street seem interesting and full of curiosity. (108)
" I wagged my head. I grinned. I pointed to her. "It was you. "Me what?" "Two years ago. My birthday. I found a package on my front step. A porcupine necktie. I never found out who gave it to me." (111)
It was Stargirl who gave Leo the porcupine necktie two years ago for his birthday.
''They said she was a self-centered spotlight hogger. They said she thought she was some kind of saint...They said she wanted everyone to feel guilty for not being as nice and wonderful s she was." (127) I think this quote shows that Stargirl's other classmates are saying rude things behind her back because they are jealous of her. They don't like how nice and happy she always is.
I think that Leo should not make Stargirl change because she is her own person, and if Leo is dating Stargirl he shouldn't care what everyone thinks of her. (138)
I don't think Stargirl changed for the better because now all she cares about is becoming popular and she only thinks about herself now. (145-146)
I think the authors message is don't care what other people think of you. I know it is a cliche, but I am still thinking of ways to make it not a cliche.
Since Stargirl knew she would win the contest even before she started, it shows her characterization which is that she is kind of full of herself. (148)
Leo grappled with the fact that no one was talking to him since he was dating Stargirl, so he convinced Stargirl to change thinking his friends would start talking to him again.
I am noticing that situations change very quickly or in other words there are a lot of ups and downs in the book.
"And suddenly it was December again, and she had everyone in her spell." (171) What does this mean? Does she become popular again?
"It'S only been weeks, but it seems like a dream. Was she really here? Who was she? Was she real? (176) The author makes it unclear what is really going on with Stargirl and where she is, so the author leaves it to your imagination. Or, to get you to read the next book.
"The high school has a new club called the sunflowers. To join, you have to sign an agreement promising to do "one nice thing per day for someone other than myself." (185) This shows that Stargirl created such an impact on the school and the kids in it (even if it doesn't seem like that) they made a club following her.
The book ended it a circle ending. " I received a gift wrapped package in the mail. It was a porcupine necktie." (186)
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
