"Her father was about to refuse but i gave him a smile that would have made ice melt... The father gave me a look and agreed" (33). this spoke to me because it shows how charming and manipulative Issa is.
"'tis all white you see white every where"(36) This spoke to me because of the visualization, it felt like i was almost in another plain white dimesion
"'So i keep to me own peace, choosing no sides". this spoke to me because it shows how wise Seth is keeping to his own peace like a mink instead of favoring one side.
Syms not seth i don't know why i wrote seth
"'Back to the churning i guess' mama laughed"(139). this shows how much of a merry lot they are together when even something a mind numbing as butter churning can make them laugh. I noticed john has the same attitude.
"Now I ain't much for fish as ye know, being a beef man meself, but i sure loved fish today"(146) The author uses great empathy as i can felt how hungry and starving these men were in fact some even ate the fish raw, "Some of the men just couldn't wait.. and ate them raw" (147)
"'I have always believed. But this time, I don't know'" It is almost as if Katerine can sense the peril that Hudson and the crew are in, this is dramatic irony
"Without think twice, Richard punched her hard" this shows how cruel Richard can be by punching a innocent toddler.
"if it weren't for that boy and his pranks, I'd have killed meself on this trip long, long ago"(171) this shows how hard it was for a perfectly sane man to consider suicide.
after many episodes of built up tension mutiny finally happens,"And it all came down to one word: mutiny".(185)
The author uses irony in which the readers know something the characters don't as we know captain Hudson was mutinied and is not in charge of the ship as the characters think he is,"Our father has been sighted off the coast of Ireland" (198) but indeed that was Hudson's boat and not actually captain Hudson
Kathleen Benner Duble uses dramatic irony in order to show the human tendency to cling to hope. She does this by using something the reader knows but the characters do not. Quest is a book about Henry Hudson, going on his last voyage. Towards the end of the book his crew mutinied at sea and left him, his son, and other crew members on a shallop , or small boat (see picture gallery below) to get home from around north america to Great Britain, with no food, leaving them ravenous. It is also about a spy girl, stealing map information from the Dutch, John Hudson, Henry Hudson’s son. Maps were very important as they were the only way of knowing the world to the country, maps were gold. To continue on with the point, one example of this point is this quote,"”’I have always believed. But this time, I don't know'" (161)It is almost as if Katerine can sense the peril that Hudson and the crew are in, creating dramatic irony, as the readers know that Hudson has been mutinied and that he indeed is not coming back. Duble eloquently creates a great story by using this technique.
Another way she uses this technique is by using the spy girl. “What happens to John Hudson is none of my concern, and yet it is”. She hints that she cares about Hudson, though she is a spy, When ironically she was spying on him as well but fell in love with him. She also ironically hopes she can marry him but readers know he is probably not coming home. This makes the story more intriguing and helps the reader with follow the story line
Yet another way she uses dramatic irony to enhance her book is by using John Hudson’s brother or Henry Hudson son,by using a classic brother love/hate relationship,”’I hope he doesn't come home. I hope he drowns out there.” such a nonchalant statement such as i hate my brother actually foreshadowed the disappear of john and Henry. This creates a disturbance within the realms of the book.
In addition to these three examples there is yet another feat of amazing writing,”Do not despair Issa, I will be yours once more”(193). John Hudson hopes he may get home but readers know he is too far from England. She yet again uses adept writing and a great and sadly uncommon technique.
These four examples clearly show Duble’s ingenious use of this technique. She creates an amazing climax with all the foreshadowing as well. With all these hints it creates an enticing trap on the story until the dramatic ending of mutiny,”And it all came down to one word: mutiny”(185). she truly uses dramatic irony and climax’s. Duble is truly an ingenious writer with amazing capabilities. In conclusion I think quest is an amazing book of realistic fiction, with actual facts mixed in with amazing imagination, In addition, her use of an already existing plot from facts and refining it was amazing, Duble clearly is an amazing literary genius.
