The first grenade was thrown and was exploded near the elector so the plan is working and by the minutes Day is waiting to meet the elector face to face and shoot him. In return, he will be able to save his brother. Pg 242

When people read books they trust the authors about what they are reading in the book. Most of the time though to make books interesting the author tells you one thing, and then later on in the book the reader find out that it is not true, and really it’s the other way around. This makes readers more interested and excited to read more of the book. Breaking the trust of readers is a risky yet powerful tool in storytelling.
In the book Prodigy by Marie Lu there is one very effective example that highly supports this theory. Day and June (the main characters) have just joined the Patriots (a group of people who supposedly work for the Colonies) and the leader of the group is Razor, and he tells everyone that they are going to kill the new elector that just came so they can rise up in power. All the characters that are part of this trust Razor fully and look up to him like he is powerful and a very renown person. Later on in the book the characters are doing everything he says and then June finds out that Razor is really working for the Republic, not the colonies and he is the bad guy that they should have been staying away from. By the author doing this it makes this plot trist very unexpected for the characters and the reader. While readers are reading this they are so surprised that they want to keep on reading.
This is a challenging thing for the author to accomplish also. They have to make it so the reader is so startled by what they just read, but not so shocked that they stop reading because they knew it was going to happen and they stop reading because that makes the book boring for them. The characters in the book are based around the authors thoughts and the readers feel the same way as the characters so if they don’t know something the readers don’t either, the author then exposes something to the characters and the reader, so you feel surprised for the character and shocked for yourself that you believed them.
As you can tell authors have to spend a lot of time making sure that they incorporate this element right, so that readers take it as a positive message. For the readers they have to play an equal part of believing the writing and being surprised when they find out that it’s really not how they thought it was, like author making characters seem bad but really they are good but in reality are bad, or an unexpected plot twist. This is very hazardous move, but can make a book if the author does it right or break a book if the author doesn't.
Day is really nervous and is freaking out, he doesn't know if he made the right decision, but he already did it and everything can go wrong now. pg 248
I think that the patriots are going to kick day and june off the team once they all get back from the mission, but day and june might run away because it maybe too dangerous to come back when the patriots are furious with them, i think they might run to the colonies. pg 248

Theories and conclusions: The Prodigy
Prodigy is a 2013 young adult novel by Marie Lu. It is the second book of a trilogy, preceded by Legend and followed by Champion. Characters have many different roles in the society Marie Lu has created. She established characters with different personalities, to create conflict between characters. Marie Lu uses lying as a tool to create conflict.
One example of this is on page 309 When Kaede says, “He got caught working for the Patriots a couple of years ago. So he made a deal with congress: He leads the the Patriots into killing Anden, the young revolutionary spitfire, and congress forgets about his traitorous ties.” Razor is the leader of a group with a extremely dangerous plan. A while ago Razor’s plan wasn’t working so well, so he needed help. He was even caught working for the patriots, and that’s how he got his whole group. Razor lied about not working with the patriots, and it created a huge commotion between everybody. Razor had a group of people to take out the Elector. Since Razor said he was working with one group, if his people realized this, everything would’ve been ruined for him. His group knew, and the war began. Since Razor lied, he created a ton of conflict
between many people. This is one example Marie Lu uses in the book to create conflict between characters.
Another example of this is on page 137 where June is taking a lie detector test. The elector wanted to do this because he really wants to believe June. He still suspects something odd about June, so he wants to be very careful. The elector think right because June is secretly working for Razor, and the plan is to kill the elector. June passes the test and the elector trusts her even more. June had to be extremely careful, not give any information to the elector,it could have a very negative impact on her. Her plan was eventually foiled, and she decided to switch sides. She wanted to help the elector, to keep him safe and tried to give Day signals to understand her and follow along with her plan. Day went to help her, because he knows she’s a smart girl, and she knows what she is doing. But, everything failed once again, and she created a battle between everybody. Marie Lu again uses an example to increase gory between characters in the book.
Creating conflict, using lying as a tool is a great way to pull the reader into the book. lying about something, can get you into a lot of trouble. When you lie you take risk, the risk can cause people you love to get hurt. To keep yourself safe, you may also have to lie. This is a great risk for your loved ones but, if you need to do it, do it. A society doesn’t advance if the individuals themselves don’t trust each other or any other person in the community.
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
