Although from the outside Ali appears to have every reason to have a great deal of self confidence, she has no self confidence at all. Ali Dilaurentis was the most popular girl at Rosewood day and everyone loved her. She became friends with four other girls at Rosewood Day, they weren’t the most popular of girls but Ali saw their potential. The summer of seventh grade they all became best friends. Ali always told them that their secrets kept them close, and anything Ali said they believed. Aria, Emily,Spencer and Hanna told Ali EVERYTHING, even things they haven’t told each other. They all believed that was the glue to their friendship.
Everything was going fine for the girls going into eighth grade until they that one sleepover that changed everything. Ali ha always controlled the girls and they went along with it. But that one night Spencer had enough. Ali was making the girls do something that they didn’t want to do and nobody was saying anything, but finally Spencer stood up for herself and the other girls. Ali wasn’t use to this and her first instinct was to be mad. They had a fight and she stormed out of the barn they were sleeping in, nobody was expecting her to never be seen again. Aria,Hanna,Emily and Spencer thought she just went home but then her parents called looking for her.The whole town was looking for Alison Dilaurentis, she was in every newspaper and on every news station. Ali would have loved all this attention. The girls were the last people she had been seen with, so they were number one suspects. They told the police all the details about their fight and most of what Ali had done to them.
You would think the Queen Bee of the school would have it all and be perfect, but not Ali. Secretly Ali is insecure and she needs to be mean to her friends so they will stay her friends. They always followed her rules and did what she asked. Up until that one night they never did anything about it. People always feared Alison because they thought she had ways to hurt them if they didn’t do what she said or what she wanted they would feel her wrath. Alison wanted people to be afraid of her because the tough wall she put up was a shell to protect against her insecurities. She was so nervous about what other people would think of her and what would happen if she wasn’t popular. Her friends thought she was the most perfect, prettiest, girl in their school. All the girls wanted to be Alison Dilaurentis, or be friends with her. The girls were thrilled when the five of them became friends. Ali made them popular and threatened them with their deepest darkest secrets if they stepped out of line. But for a while the girls didn’t mind if it meant getting to be friends with their schools “it girl”.
The insecurities of a person can give them a hard edge, and they can a hard person to be friends with. But if your friendship is important to both people then your friendship shouldn’t have to be bribed. Secrets are fun to share, but only with the right people. If something personal gets into the wrong hands it can be manipulated and changed and spread. But all in all insecure people have to be trusted with care.
