The author makes a plot twist by June trying to find day because he is the prime suspect for her brother's murder but the way she finds him is him saving her and she doesn't even know that it really is day so it is very entertaining she's supposed turn the worst criminal in the world even though he saved her life

"No matter how sharp my intuition is, no matter how well I do at Drake or how perfectly I score in defense and target practice and hand-to-hand combat, Metias's eyes always old that fear." (19) Metias must always be afraid that June will get hurt or killed, just like their parents.
"'Be careful,' I murmur. But it's pointless to say now. Metias is too far away to hear me." (21) The eerie way that chapter ended makes me think that something bad will happen to Metias, since he won't be back from his Captain duties until dark.
june is going help day escape pg 257
John died for Day!!!!!! p.297
"I've hidden a knife flat against the sole of each boot." (23) Day is hiding some knives on him because he wants to stay protected when he goes out for the evening.
"I stay where I am as two soldiers check me for weapons. I yelp on cue when they touch my arms or stomach." (25) Day is pretending to be hurt to get into the hospital.

"My hands start shaking so hard that I press them against Metias's clothes in an attempt to steady them. I'm supposed to be analyzing the crime scene, but I can't concentrate. 'You should have taken me with you,' I whisper to him. Then I lean my head against his and begin to cry." (45) This is how June reacts to her brother's death. The way the author wrote this shows how devastated and angry she was both at Metias for leaving her and at his murderer for killing the one person that meant the most to her.
days execution is today and he wants to escape pg 283
"As I black out, I realize that my pendant is no longer looped around my neck." (34) This pendant must mean a lot to Day if even in his current severely beat-up state, he recognizes that such a simple object is missing, an object someone else may not notice is missing until much much later.
"He had a son who worked at the warfront. He died of the plague a few years ago." (54) The man that is taking care of Tess and Day must be helping them because he didn't want to let them die knowing he could help, since he couldn't help that his son died.
Marie Lu purposely leaves her reader in the dark so that the reader feels that he/she is on the same journey as the characters. There are many examples in this book that will help to prove that this is true. One example is when June’s brother dies, and commander Jameson is taking June to go and see his dead body. During this scene, “I don’t take in any details of the scene...‘I’m going to leave you here for a bit, so you can collect your thoughts. Meet me in two minutes…”’p.43+44 Readers don’t realize that this is important until later on in the book. Commander Jameson didn’t want June to stay for so long because she thought that she might be able then to discover some key detail. June thought that the criminal Day had killed her brother, but later on she looks at the pictures of her brother (which were classified until she hacked the server) and notices that there were two blood spots, Day had caused the one in her brothers soldier, but someone else had done the other. That night when Thomas came to bring her to the hospital he had a streak of black grease on his forehead, and that same thing that was on the blood stain through her brothers heart. That’s when June realized, “Thomas, the soldier that would happily carry out any order from commander Jameson, even if it’s to kill a childhood friend.” p.248
In addition to that, June and Metias were told their parents had died in a car accident. Metias remembers them but June doesn’t, “I didn’t know our parents long enough to miss them in the same way Metias does.”p.19. Later on in the book after Metias had died June was reading his journals and uncovered a website that was “WWW FOLLOW ME JUNE BUG DOT COM” p.241, and when she went to it it showed the real truth that her brother had discovered about their parent. It said, “When dad tried to resign Baccarin knew that he had figured out the reason for his research...was ordered to ‘find a way to smooth the whole matter over’... they killed him.”’p.244. All this time she thought that her parents death was just some car accident, when really it was a person doing orders to “find a way”. As readers read this book they all believe the same things that June has been told, when everything become unveiled, readers too are surprised and shocked about what we just read, or heard (if your the character).
Lastly, in the beginning of the book when they are introducing the characters, readers find out something about Day. When you turn ten in this community you must take and hopefully pass your trial. During Day’s turn he says in the book, “I failed my own trial when I was ten.... they say you’ve been sent away to the Republics labor camps...this is a lie...Congress will let you die without first sending you to the labs to be examined for imperfections.”p. 6+7+8 Day was in there and they did all sorts of things to him like looking into his eye, and opening his nee. Later on in the book he meets up with a character named June. When they are together she tells him something about his Trial their conversation is, “‘What are you talking about? I failed my Trial.’... ‘No, you didn’t. You got a perfect score.’”p.200 All this time when Day was tortured in the lad, they weren't doing it because he had failed, they were doing it to see how he could be so smart. This part in the book is so surprising and frustrating for readers and for Day. By the author doing this it always leaves readers to think one thing and then find out that it is totally different.
Marie Lu forces the readers to predict outcomes by leaving out critical details. There are many examples in this book that will help prove this theory. One example is June said about Day’s dead mother“Yeah I really think I killed her” pg 160. This was explaining the whole scene that just had happened with Day and how Day’s mother was shot to death by Thomas. June feels really bad for him now because she was actually in love with him so she feels that it was her who really shot her mother. This example proves my theory because right after she says she she did it it goes straight to Day and doesn’t talk about it until 75 pages so I have to predict what June is going to do to help the problem. So it leaves me in the dark which makes me want to keep reading the book until I find the answers. Marie Lu constructed the story in a certain way which keeps them intrigued in the whole story by making them wait to find the answer. She puts the character in a place where it always changes the personality of them and then just leaves the reader on a cliffhanger by changing character and you must wait until those critical details that are left out come back into the story and you are just shocked. Marie Lu makes her writing very eloquent because it just flows throughout the whole book and makes the book so entertaining by using a very intriguing style of writing to keep the reader in the book.
Another example in the book is when June found out that day didn’t really fail he was the only other person to ever get a perfect so June says, I am no longer the Republics only prodigy with a perfect score.” (187) This example also proves my theory because it shows that it is very important to know that day also got a perfect score and if it wasn’t for this he wouldn’t have been the criminal he is and would’ve lived with his family very happily. But right when June is about to explain why did this happen it goes straight to day being the first person and just leaves you in the dark, so you must read on until the author put those crtical details left behind back in the book. THis is why this book is so entertaining almost all the time you are waiting to find answers as if it was in your own life. and when you find the answer you already have come across a part that she leaves out critical details which makes you want to keep reading. This book may look dull from the cover but when you start reading you won’t want to stop until you’re done.
Another example in the book that proves my theory is that June knows that day won’t follow her because that would be too dangerous so she thinks to herself,” I won’t be allowed to force day to come to me-which leaves me only one option. I’ll have to go to him. (80). This example really leaves me in the dark because I want to know what her plan is going to be to be with day, but without day realizing that she is trying to catch him. She must be careful going undercover because if she falls into the wrong guy things can go wrong. This example is at the end of the chapter so right after this sentence it goes straight to day’s thoughts and what is going on in his life. The reader is very intrigued in the story when they read this certain quote but realize is the last in the chapter, so they just keep reading until they find one of these answers.
. This author proves my theory of forcing the reader to predict outcomes by leaving out critical details through various means of examples. These examples are put throughout the story to prove a theory to make very interesting, and when the reader finds the details they are intrigued.
This book takes place in Los Angeles. (-1)
This book is written in different color fonts. This is not usual (1)
"Mother thinks I'm dead". Well. This is a really strong first sentence. I know this will be a good book. (1)
The character is wanted, yet nobody knows what she/he looks like. If they don't know, why is he wanted? (2)
The book is written in two POVS: June and Day (11)
Day's POV is written in gold, June's is in black. Maybe so you know which person youre reading (11)
June is a female, and a prodigy. She is in yje best academy four years early. Awesome. (12-13)
Each different POV is a new chapter. Theyre just not labeled with numbers. (22)
"Silence" The author repeats this word over and over again, trying to keep the quiet, intense mood. (78-79)
June gallantly went on the mission. She knows her brother would think it was dangerous, but she is determined. (73)
Day is groggy and dazed after waking up, after a serious injury. There are gun shots and cuts, which seems really painful, so I'm not surprised. (51)
June is very ornery. She knows this mission is going to be hard, and she knows that her brother would not allow it. If he were still alive. But she still does it anyways. (73)
June doggedly tries to survive, even though she just got STABBED yesterday. She's a tough cookie! (120)
I feel contempt towards Kaede. She thinks she fights so well, and she thinks she's such hot stuff. Day and Tess look at her indignantly, because they may be jealous of her fighting skills. (103)
The whole Republic is a vast area, yet everyone is looking for this one person, who is wanted (Day). I don't get it. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack. (1)
Day's mother is shot in the head. The plague patrol come to the house to take away Eden, who has a virus. But they take away everyone else, and Day strikes back. He ends up with a dead mother. (157)
After the death of his mother, and the virus still in Eden, it is vital to cure Eden and try to escape the plague patrol, so Day can keep them alive. (157)
DAY!!! He got shot, and then taken away. How is June going to find him? And how is he going to save Eden and the rest of the group: Tess, June? (159)
There is a SECOND PART! It is called: The girl who shatters the shining glass. I wonder what that means. (161)
June is in charge of taking care of Day, and she is only allowed to give him one cup of water and a small food ration per day. But she cares for him, and tells the soldiers to fix his infected leg and get him some food. (201)
Day is about to be killed in less than a week, since he was wanted. But I'm kind of confused on how they know what he looks like NOW, because they didn't know anything on page one. (218)
June is constantly trying to help Day. I'm sure she doesn't want him to die any time soon. But if Commander Jameson ever found out, she would kill both. (230)
-posting the same event so I can use the project eloquence word-
June is very valiant. If she got caught helping Day, she would be killed along with Day! (230)
Oh! June had Day's pendant! THATS how she recognized him! (231)
there is now a different font because this is not June, it is Metia's journal. (131)
June has read through many journal entries. The entries go up to page (248)
HOLY CANNOLI! "I'm going to help Day escape" was the quote! I knew it! WOW! I'm amazed! (251)
Day tries to escape by pretending that he has the plague. I can't believe the guards are stupid enough to believe him! (255)
I think it's safer for Day's mother to think he is dead because then Day won't have the urge to go and visit her. (1)
Marie Lu was born in 1984 in Wuxi, China. By the age of 5, she and her family moved to Georgia in 1989. She attended the University of Southern California and interned at Disney Interactive Studios.
I dont lie this part of the book because June is out looking for day to kill him. Since this book is so predictable, I know that they are going to fall in love. (45)
I thin that Day didn't kill Metias because like he said, he would never kill a person. Also, he said that he threw the dagger into Metias' shoulder, while June find a wound both in his shoulder and heart. (75)
The mood of the book right now is betrayal because right now June, Day, and Tess are all friends and surviving the dumps of the republic together. But all June is doing is leading Day into a trap to get killed. (66)
The point of veiw of this book is different. This is because it switched every other chapter from the first person of June, to the first person of Day because they take turns saying I, me, my.
The coin that Day carries around with him symbolizes his father because it was the last gift he ever got from him before the father suddenly disappeared. (87)
The tone in Tess's voice when Day's around her is happiness, loving, and playful because she has a big crush on him. (98)
1. I think when Day escaped the hospital, the suppressors saved him. I think they did because they broke his fall and gave him something to and on.
2. I think when June cracked Metias's code, it helped her understand more why Day didn't kill him.
3. I think when Day takes June in from a skiz fight it helps them get more fond of eachother.
