Thesis and Conclusions
Game Changers by Mike Lupica is about a boy named Ben who loves to play Quarterback but all of his football coaches have said he is too short. He always wants to be nice to his teammates and do whatever he can to make the team better but when a new kid comes on the team who also happens to be the coaches son takes the spot at quarter back and isn't even as good as Ben he still tries to help the new kid, Shawn to be a better player and teammate. Ben’s kindness results in rewards for both Ben and Shawn.
When no one believed Shawn was a nice guy and could be a better teammate Ben made sure Shawn had a friend. Since Shawn wasn't the best quarter back Ben taught him to be a better quarterback “‘He’s our teammate and he asked for help”’ (76) Ben asks his friends to help the new teammate and quarter back to be a better player to help the team out, but neither one wanted to go with him.
Even when Shawn told Ben an important secret that could compromise their friendship Ben still continued to be nice to Shawn and help him be a better quarterback. “‘I never wanted to play quarterback”’ (65) When Shawn told Ben that he didn't want to be a quarterback the first thing that went to Ben head was “Not fair” (67). Ben has always wanted to be a quarter back but his coaches has told him he is too short to be quarter back. But Shawn who isn’t even as good as Ben got the quarterback job because his dad is the coach, but Shawn didn’t even want the quarterback job.
Even though Ben was so nice to Shawn by helping him to be a better quarter back Shawn didn't care that he helped him. “We lost thanks to you” (83). Even though Ben taught Shawn to be a better a better quarter back he did not respect him by not telling him that they lost because Ben dropped the ball in the final seconds and did not get a touchdown to win the game. When Shawn throws a bad throw and gets mad at himself Ben tells him to shake it off and not worry about and just get to the next play.
Shawn eventually did become a team mate and a friend to both Ben and Shawn. “I can trust you as a friend right.” (92) Shawn trusts Ben as a friend enough to tell him a secret. Ben’s consideration ended in a friend for both Ben and Shawn.
