p.2 "The other factions celebrate birthdays." I wonder what are factions
"I will decide the rest of my life (p.3). I just found out that 16 year olds are put into factions. This girl is very profound on factions because she really understands it
Beatrice has took the test... her results ruled out only 2 factions. Usually it rules out 4.This makes her divergent. What does this mean?
Beatrice is being edged to tell her results to Caleb her brother even tho it bends rules(p.31)
Beatrice heard that their is a rumor that someone who took the test had a problem and went home early because she was sick. Only Beatrice knows it was her because she can't discuss her results with anyone else.
"we will become members if we complete inotation."(p.39) I wonder what inotation is
Caleb chose Erudite. Beatrice chose Dauntless. Both children are leaving Abington. I wonder what will happen.
Beatrice has passed dauntless inatation, so she is a dauntless member. She renamed herself Tris.
The Pit is a dauntless place that on 1 side is rocks and if you fall off a step you will die... this is crazy
Dauntless is a faction that represents bravery... I can clearly tell that this faction is bravery
Beatrice has done many crazy events in Dauntless which is different from her original faction, Abnengton. I wonder if this transition will be smooth?
Trice has met 1 of the 5 leaders of dauntless. She found that she must train for dauntless.
"you choose us, now we choose you." I the reader just found out that only 10 out of the 20 initates make it, based on training.
The initations will fight eachother to determine their rankings. People who rank 16-20 will be cut when the first stage is over. Then rankings 11-15 will be cut. Will Tris be cut, leaving her to be factionless.
Peter has became Tris' clear enemy. I know this because Peter worte Stiff on Tris' bed, and Tris said to all of her friends how much she hates Peter
When Tris' best friend Christina lost to Molly, the ruler saw Christina being weak and ordered her to hang on a rail over rocks. If Christana hangs over for 5 minutes, she will be forgiven. Tris unceasingly shouts, "Christina you could do it "until the 5 minutes were up.
Tris' second fight was Myra. Since Myra was short and weak Tris merely won the fight.
Tris is going to play paintball, a dauntless tradition. I wonder what will happen? It is her first time playing paintball. She was on 4s team. The other team was Eric's team, Eric is described as ornery, because he is a harsh leader.
Tris is climbing the ferris wheel to get to higher grounds to find the flag. I wonder what will happen?
Tris spotted an ember that represented the flag.
Tris had a plan to split up 3 and 4 to capture the flag.
Tris plan worked, and her team captured the flag. Christina captured it. Tris is smart
Tris is throwing knives in training. She hit the target many times. This is the 2nd to last day of trianing before 4 people get cut from dauntless. Which means they will have to live factionless.
Al has been called out for being coward, so he must stand infront of a target while 4 throws knives.
Tris volenteered to take Als place. 4 started throwing knives at her. He hit her the last time on purpose to teaach her a lesson about putting herself in that position since 4 favors her.
Its the day before visiting day. This is where your parents visit you if you changed factions. I wonder if her parents will forgive her.
Tris is angry at Peter and Molly for embarrasing her. Her next fight is against molly. Tris won and kicked Molly as hard as she could, not carring about Molly.
Tris mom came to visiting day. I wonder what will happen?
Al is missing. His parents are looking for him, and he hasn't been there so far. I wonder what happened.
When Jeanine turned 4 evil, Tris pleaded to her to change him back to the way he was, because 4 was trying to kill her.
I feel like Tris feels guilty of being a Divergent, because she feels like this is something that she can't keep in for herself, so Four and someone else already notices, but she still doesn't know what it means.
When all of the initiates are boarding the train, it seems as if Tris is completely clueless about what is happening- but I guess from the text, they are going to the Abnegation Faction for war.
When Eric, the person of whom is leader, traps Tris and Tobias (Four), I feel like they are helpless and weak. But when Jeanine threatens them and calls them Divergent rebels, I feel almost bad and sorry for them.
In the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, all of Tris’ decisions are connected to one another. Tris makes many decisions that are good and bad, in which all of them connect to one another.
When Tris enters her aptitude test, she has to choose between cheese or a knife. Instead, she chooses none. Then a dog came charging at a little girl, Tris decides to try and stop the dog from getting to the little girl. If Tris never tried to stop the dog from reaching the little girl, she never would have chosen Dauntless, which means he never would’ve been Divergent.
Also, at the choosing ceremony, Tris has narrowed her chosen faction down to either Dauntless or Abnengton. She has to choose either between herself(going away from family) or her family(staying in Abnengton). In the end she chooses Dauntless. This decision is connected to other decisions because without her choosing Dauntless, she would’ve never ran away to visit her family, which wouldn’t of triggered many other events in the book.
Also, when Tris is playing capture the flag, she decides to climb the ferris wheel to see the other teams flag. Four decides to follow Tris up the ferris wheel. On the ferris wheel Tris and 4 bond. Without Tris deciding to go on the ferris wheel, Tris would’ve never liked 4. So in the end of the book she wouldn’t have saved him from a gun, so they would’ve never found out, shes divergent.
Also, Tris decided to go visit her brother Caleb, because her mother needs to tell him to research a special syrum, and her mother is banned from Erudite. So Tris decides to take a risk of her getting in huge trouble, to visit Caleb. When Tris gets to Erudite headquarters, she finds Caleb. Tris told him to research the syrum. Without Tris going to visit him, Tris would have died because Caleb saved her because he found out about the syrum.
Additionally when 4 and Tris are supposed to be sleep walking as a test to see if they’re divergent(they are and they will be killed if anyone finds out., Tris and 4 are walking next to eachother, when Eric one of the dauntless leaders puts a gun next to 4s head, and says to the other leaders, “I’m going to kill him, I always hated him.” Tris decides to put her gun to Eric’s head to save 4 from dying. Then Tris decides to pull the trigger and shot his leg. Then 4 and Tris ran away from the leaders. This decision connects to every other decision after this one because, if she didn’t decide to give herself up to save 4, she would’ve never made any other decisions that relate to 4.
In conclusion from these details, clearly Tris’ decisions connect to one another. Everything Tris does and decides to do, will relate to her future decisions. This is why the book divergent is a great example of how decisions connect to one another.
"The other factions celebrate birthdays ,but we don't" (pg.2)
I think that the factions are a group of people in this book. I think that because they way that the author put it in the sentence sounds like this is a group of people.
"So today is the day, she said. Yes I reply. Are you nervous?. I stare into my eyes for a moment. Today is the day of the aptitude test that will show me which of the five factions I belong in." (pg.2)
Book Question: What is the aptitude test ?
Answer: The aptitude test is a test that will show which of the five factions the student belongs in.
"The tests begin after lunch. We sit at the long tables in the cafeteria, and the test administrators call ten names at a time, one for each testing room." (8)
This test is getting to be a big deal for her. I think that she is really worried right now and is nervous.
If she doesn't do good on this test and or does not get into the faction that she wants to I could predict she will be extremly sad.
I think that Tris feels guilty of being Divergent.
"Our classes are cut in half today, so we will attend all of them before the aptitude tests, which take place after lunch. My heart rate is already elevated"
This is not that good because now they have more stress and might not do so good on the test.
I think the author is trying to create a perfect world otherwise known as a Utopia. I infer that because everyone is put into a different ¨category¨ based on how they act.
I think this world isn't necessary a Utopic world but a world were groups of people fill up the community. Not everyone has to be perfect but the group they decide to be in HAS to be who they are and what they believe in or else they won't be helping the world survive. I'm still trying to figure this out though.
Tris is unlike anyone in the book so far. Everyone that transferred still has personalities from their old faction, but Tris has personalities from EVERY faction. She's brave, selfless, honest, caring, and smart all at the same time unlike everyone else. She would fit in to every faction, I think.
I searched Dauntless up. It means showing fearlessness and determination. After seeing more into the the Dauntless nature I understand WHY the Dauntless people are in the Dauntless Faction because they all have to be brave and courageous.
I'm noticing while reading that Factions are based on character and personality. If your selfless, ruthless, honest, etc.
I'm making a prediction that Tris falls in love with Four. He is always trying to help her and he sees intelligence in her so by those clues I think they fall in love.
When Tris chose Dauntless I thought she wouldn't pass through the Initiation, but I underestimated her and some people in the book also did.
I've noticed that many times in the book the author uses ambiguity. I have been confused and left unclear in the book but it has made the book better.
When Tori told Tris that being Divergent is dangerous, it is a foreshadow showing that its will become a factor in the book. During Stage two, the simulations showed that Tris was Divergent. She broke the simulation/ overcame the system because she has attributes from all different factions.
When someone turns sixteen they have to take the aptitude test to find out in what faction they are in. (pg 2)
There are five factions: Dauntless, Amity, Abnegation, Candor, Erudite.
Beatrice's family is Abnegation. Abnegation are people who are selfless who feed the factionless and lead the government. (pg 10)
Every faction dresses differently so people could know who is in what faction.
Beatrice decides to go to the faction "Dauntless" the brave and Caleb decides to enter "Erudite." (pg 25)
Tris becomes friends with Christina, Will and Al. She also meets Four in the Dauntless headquarters. Four is a counselor.
Peter becomes Tris's enemy. He spray painted "stiff" on her bed and beat her up. (pg 79)
Eric decided that Tris and her friends have to take tests to make sure they are going to stay in Dauntless. If they don't pass the test they will become factionless. The tests include fighting each other. The Dauntless leaders will chose the top ten.
Eric is a rough Dauntless leader that made the new rule... the tests. (pg 119)
Tory told Tris that she cannot tell anyone that she is Divergent including her family because people think that being Divergent is dangerous and will try to kill you.
When Veronica Roth writes "The other factions celebrate birthdays, but we don't. It would be self-indulgent." I wonder that in her faction, if it is restricted to be greedy
"He is plaster-pale. He brushes his palms along his legs...and when he brings them back, his fingers shake" (10) This illustrates a clear and vivid picture of Caleb. The way he is described leads me to think that during the aptitude test, you are faced with fears
I predict that Tris will be in Erudite (knowledge) because when a dog is growling a few yards away from her she "thinks about running, but the dog will be faster than [her]. I can't wrestle it to the ground...If I can jump over one of the tables and use it as a shield--no, I am too short to jump over one of the tables and not strong enough to tip one over... I should look it in the eye. That's a sign of aggression"
"Divergent...Beatrice, she says, under no circumstances should you share that information with anyone" This leads me to conclude that Divergents are dangerous. How and why I don't know
"Decades ago, our ancestors realized that it is not political ideology, religious belief, race, or nationalism to blame for a warring world... they determined that the fault of human personality--of humans inclination towards evil. "(42)This suggests that this society is set in the future, maybe after a third world war
I realized that Veronica Roth uses three + symbols to signify time passing on page 53
Veronica Roth uses excellent word choice to describe the pit "Uneven rock walls rise several stories above my head. Built into the stone are places for food, clothing, supplies, leisure activities. Narrow paths and steps carved from rock connect them. There are no barriers to keep people from falling off the side."
I see that only 1/2 of all the initiates make it past initiation because out of the 11 Dauntless-born and 9 transfers, only 10 make it."only the top 10 initiates are made members...there are 11 Dauntless-born and nine of you"
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
